I remember having to reverse my prop whenever I would spin up milfoil or other objects in my other boats. Well, I had my first experience this weekend with a jet boat in that same situation. Lakes here are full of milfoil that gets chewed up by props and floats on the surface and our day was cut a little short. It was getting to be time to go anyways so we puttered back to the launch. This morning after clearing the weeds(what I could see thru the front)from the shafts decided to go ahead and pull the pumps as my gut was telling me there was more. What did I find? A nice thick ball of fishing line that was also spun up on one of the shafts underneath the plastic shroud. Couldn't see it looking through the front and I couldn't even remove all of the weeds because of the shroud. Needless to say, I ripped those stupid shaft covers off and chucked'em. Here's the plan; Take a mask and snorkel with an extended tube, having a "friend"(preferably someone who likes me) holding it above water while I swim under and clear the mess with my handy dandy tool I made to go in through the grate. I'm certainly not gonna limp all the way back to the trailer, yank it out, pull the pumps and clear the stuff every time this happens because of that plastic thing. Which will be often I'm sure. Whoever came up with that shaft shroud is a moron!:banghead:

I'm taking a mask with me as well had a similar problem sunday sucked up a root looking thing. Had to stop at sand bar and blindly swim under boat and reach in the pump. My grate is missing if any one knows where I can find one?

I've been searching on there for the last year since we bought the boat. No luck yet. I've found one person selling grates but I don't know if it will fit or can be modified to fit. I need one before I suck up something big I do a lot of river boating.

Do you know anyone who can weld aluminum? Should be really easy to make one. I could make one out of steel but it would rust eventually. 3 thick rods cut to proper lengths, grinded for the profiles and welded to a base plate at the correct angles Drill 2 holes and paint it. Done. The key would be not having to pay for shop labor.
