hello forgive me if this question has been posted before.. im new. my twin rotax engines in my speedster are always blowing off smoke real bad. once it warms up it aint that bad, however i have had this problem for 2 years. i ask people and they reccommend this and that kind of oil and the problem still happens. i dont use my boat alot but i just want to know a good way to mix fuel and oil or is there a real good brand of oil for this engine

My Speedster does give off smoke, as do all outboards, inboards, etc, but isn't horribly bad and does lessen once warm. Are you mixing your oil or do you use the oil pump? Have you checked compression just to make sure all is fine there? Also, pull your plugs and see what they say.

Reply back with those things so I can better help :)

Smoke or Steam?

The rotax engine has a water injected exhaust system. Some of this water flashes into steam as it exits the boat, so it's possible your seeing steam. If it is, it should have a lighter look to it than smoke and should dissappear quickly. If it is oil and your still using the oil injection pump, then it sounds to me that it's out of syncro with your carbs throttle cam. There are two cables that connect to the carbs, the forward cable should be the throttle and the aft cable should be attached to the oil injection pump. These two cables work in unison with each other to ensure you have the right amount of oil for the amount of fuel. To much oil injected will cause it to smoke, but should also cause it to foul the plugs.
It seems that most in this forum like to premix rather than rely on the oil injection system. If you do, I understand the ratio needs to be 50:1 or 40:1, hope this is of some help!

'95 Speedster: Smokin'!

I'm also new to this forum, and glad to see my problem doesn't appear to be unique. My '95 Speedster now makes so much oil smoke (both engines) I can't use it. Since the 650s are getting old, I suspected scored cylinders. Had it bored and installed new oversize pistons and rings, but no difference. While rebuilding them, I did think it was odd that both crankcases were filled to the bearings with oil. Drew as much out as I could before buttoning it up again. Oil injection valves are adjusted per the manual.

It appears there are seals between the rotary valve and the crankcase, and they may be bad. The easy fix may be going to premixed gas, but my questions are:
- Do you agree the likely problem is the seals?
- If I go to premixed gas, can all of the existing oil system be disconnected, or are there still some parts of the engine that require direct lubrication?
- If the seals are bad enough to allow oil into the crankcase, I assume they would leak air also. Does this reduce power/efficiency/reliablility?

I haven't really been able to use the boat for 2 years, so any guidance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that your speedster has a rotary valve system in it. If the oil was in abundance in the crank area, it sounds like the seals in the rotary chamber are bad. The oil comes from the 2 stroke injector tank and lubricates the rotary shaft in the engine. If you do go to premix you have to leave the tank in place so it can lubricate the rotary shaft. On each side of the shaft is a seal that is suppose to keep out the oil from entering the crank area under the cylinders. This could be the problem you are experiencing. To resolve the problem you will have to pull the engine and split the cases to replace the seals. It does require some mechanical skills and know how.

Rotary seals....

Your rotary chamber seals are bad. You have to replace them whether you go primix or not. You can't disconnect the oil line going to the chamber as KustomKarl has said.............:agree:
