I am trying to find which (if any) SmartCraft gauges are compatible with my 2002-03? 240 EFI M2 Jet Drive - Model S-240J30ZS. I bought the boat used and have all the owners manual information and would like to have a gauge that shows engine hours so that I know which maintenance is due.

Hi Dr. Honda

My engine model is OE413501

How do I know which smart craft monitor and wiring I need?

Also are the parts and guide provided by Racereddie, applicable to my boat as well?? Also Racereddie mentioned that a separate wire is needed so that the Smartcraft can give fuel gauge measurement but he did not elaborate on what wire is needed an how that is hooked up. Any ideas on that?

As usual thank you!

I'm not sure exactly what part numbers you will need, but the customer service at Mercury is GREAT! if you give them a call, they will tell you exactly what you need. Fyi... have your SN handy.

79-8M0062375 MERC MONITOR NMEA 2000 SINGLE ENGINE PLUS KIT LVL2 (Superseded from 79-8M0055121)
87-8492K14 JUNCTION BOX KIT
84-879982T20 HARNESS ASSEMBLY

U will need all 3 as the harness is the cable that runs from engine to junction box and will not connect to merc monitor

as for fuel u will need to buy the fuel sender that plugs into the junction box. I did not use this its not required.

You will need to buy a nama 2k GPS unit to plug into this if you want speed.

Thank you so much

I think I have everything charted out except one thing. I like that the SC monitor can give me the exact fuel tank reading but it seems far more convenient to use the analog gauge than scrolling through the SC menu each time to check the fuel level. Is there a way I can keep my analog gauge and also install the SC fuel harness to get the SC monitor to read the fuel level?

The reason this is puzzling (to me) is that the current wires at the fuel tank are already in use (presumably for the analog gauge) so I am not sure how I would be able to connect the SC fuel harness to the fuel tank simultaneously.

page six u can find the fuel sender part. I left my analog gauge in the cluster. If you want both u have to buy the fuel sender to connect to the junction box and would basically have to cut another hole in the tank so that both go in the tank at the same time is my guess.

I love my merc monitor but it was way to much work for me to not use my analog gauge so i stuck with that. It still tells me how many gph and MPG i get without it so thats fine by me.

Yes, you can bolt the wires of the SMARTCRAFT FUEL/PADDLE WHEEL/OIL BOAT 859743T 03 on top, cleaned the already installed wires since I was already there. I did not change my analog gauge. Before I bought the smartcraft I filled the boat 10 gallons at a time and found that with the analog gauge past full was full, Full was ¾, ¾ was half and half was ¼ or 10 gallons left. When I hooked up the smartcraft it was the same. As I said the smartcraft was very accurate. As for the scrolling, you are not going through gas that quickly so I would look at the analog and when it said ¾ tank I would check the smartcraft to make sure I was around 20 gallons.

I wish I still had my boat to just go out and tell you but I also remember that what to do with the ground wire made me read even more, I am pretty sure I just connected it because there were only two wires and the tank was not grounded other than at the gauge (if my memory serves me)

As for setting the system up, once I decided that I was going to only use that single monitor I researched that I did not HAVE to have the junction box or caps I just needs a single cable (read also as less money) with terminal resistors on both ends (84-879982T20). The short cable that comes with the gauge is useless unless you have a junction box, WHICH is only needed if you have a network for more than one gauge. Go with the single cable then get the SMARTCRAFT FUEL/PADDLE WHEEL/OIL BOAT 859743T 03.
