ski rope length for surfer or tube?

OK, since we started to discuss pulling skiers...

I bought a ski rope, single handle, figuring I would use it with hauling dad out through the surf so he doesn't have to paddle (laying down or standing up...haven't figured THAT out yet) or maybe pulling just a kneeboard or innertube.

What is a good length to keep the rope towing a surfer or tube?

I put the entire 75' on there but it seemed WAY too long, and shortened it down to 35-40', which seems about right. Good length for using it as a tow rope if I ever break down.

Leftover chunks were used as bowlines, etc.

Any feedback on shorter or longer, and why?

Here's the trick...you want the line long enough to be past the turbulent water from the jet pump. I usually use 45' as a normal length...give or take about 10' or so either way...

And, should I point the jet down for less turbulence, or does trim angle even make a difference?

It will pull with more "torque" with the trim angle down, right?

Yes, with the trim down, it will give you more pulling power. I would try pulling with the trim all the way down first and adjust from there, till you the the right position for you.

I love it when it comes together!

Great job with the pics, and a link with the threads...It kinda makes the term FREE in the avatar much sweeter, when the doo works and no problems! I like it when I see and hear about good times.:)

A 75' rope might seem long but it is nessasary. i took a boating class a couple years ago and the fumes that come out of the back of the ski could harm the rider. they figure 75' is a safe distance to disapate the fumes. anyway im new to this forum i think im picking up my first ski wednesday its a 94 xp.

I have a 75' rope. It has several sections of different lengths and colors, and I currently have it at about 45'. I figured I could add or subtract length until it feels right.

I think I will look in a pawn shop for a cheap set of skis before I buy a wake board. Just to be sure it pulls up and handles well with someone in tow. Then I can experiment with the rope length.

Experiments...

...I do them...

I also do lots of odd things with my Maverick. Just messing around to see what it will do.

I LOVE to experiment, even if it detracts from the overall experience I am having. Most of the time, I find that an odd combination of parts leads to an unexpected GAIN in performance.
