Ski pole doesnt lock in place

I cant get my ski pole to lock in place. Has anyone had this problem before? If so, is there an easy fix to it?

It is held up by friction at least on mine it is.

When I pull it up, it just slides back down, I have never seen one properly work, for I have had this problem since I bought the used boat. I was just guessing that it would lock in place at some point pulling it up.. If I pull up too much it will just come completely out. Maybe I will try taking it completely out and study it some more and see if theres some sort of pin that is malfunctioning.

there is a metal clip held on by a rubber strap that is about half way down the pole that is in the bilge

Thank you wolfpac! I will go check that out. Kind of a pain getting back there for me with the mercury.
