Ski Locker from Spring to Gas Strut

I need to replace the spring that prevents the ski locker from opening too far.
Has anyone converted the spring to a gas strut/spring?
If so what length did you use?

Ive been considering this as well, was thinking of placing a short piece of thin-wall vinyl tube over or inside the existing spring. I forgot to keep clear and that door fell on my toes once which kinda hurt for awhile.

I'm not sure if a gas spring could be worked into the system, many are so strong the hinges might be damaged.

Also a piece of light chain or cable would keep the door from opening too far but wouldn't hold it open like the spring sorta does.

I don't mind the spring, but you have to be REALLY careful with the guillotine action if you bump it unexpectedly. I have had to replace the gas shocks a few times, so I like the longevity of the spring, I just hold it open, or have someone "guard" it as its used to lower the chances of **WHACK**

Yes, the locker door closed and caught the back of my wife's ankle.
If I had a gas strut, it would be a lot safer.
I am going to use a strut similar to one used to hold up a glass rear window.

Whats going to be tricky is measuring the collapsed length of the strut with the ski locker closed :willy_nilly:

Another option in case you cannot locate a gas spring might be to attach a bracket and rod that hangs down from the locker door and props it up as the door is opened. Just tossing out potential ideas...
