ok I am a 20 year veteran marine mechanic who has rebuilt many 2 stroke jet skis. I have worked on 4 strokes but never have taken an engine out and rebuilt it. I have the opportunity to buy a 2004 GTX s/c limited machine that has a mint outside and comes with a trailer but the motor is blown up. owner claims that the block has a hole in it and head is no good. package will come with a brand new head complete with no hours on it ready to bolt on. Also comes with a factory s/c that has 2 hours on it that he claimed he paid $1600.00 for. Looks like I need to find a bottom end that is complete to put this together. Question is I have negotiated down to $1100.00 for the package and is there anything else I should now about the machine or engine?? is this a fair deal? does anyone know where I can find a complete bottom end for sale. any coments would be appreciated thanks wolfie

If you do the work, it can be done "reasonably affordably". It can easily cost 3500 to 4 grand for a rebuilt 4-tech engine.

From 04 to mid 06 they had an exhaust valve issue. Look at the valves and see if they have the number 72 or 75 stamped on them. If 72, replace the valves even though the head is new. Those valves are filled with sodium to cool them but they fail and cause severe damage when they do. Also, the SC from 04 to 07 (thugh some 08) had ceramic washers. Make sure the new one you have is not some New "Old Stock". If so, replace the ceramic washers as they fails, crumble, then fall into the engine gears and the engine needs to be pulled to clean it out.

I don't know what the cost of a bottom end will be. Other may have some good info for you..

No! This is not the Sea.doo of your choice Walk away. .

If the ski is clean, you should buy it. I pay $1000 for clean blown up 4tecs(I usually try to verify the block is good first though) so with the trailer and some new parts, I'd do it even with the bad block. If you can rebuild a two stroke, you can rebuild a 4 stroke. there are some very important things you will have to learn but nothing beyond your ability if you rebuild 2 strokes. A good used block will only cost you about $600 or so, make sure to get the old style. You may not need a new crank, many times the crank itself is fine even when a rod breaks. Buy it, read the manual twice, tear it down and post pics. I always have lots of spare 4tec parts and people here will help.

thanks for the reply ski-doo I will let you know if I buy it and send pictures just found an 03 gtx 4 tec that has good block and turbo for $200

+1 on ski's opinion, its a good buy based on your description.

I was going to say 5-600 for the block, they don't come up every day but when they do they are priced pretty fair.

wow, a complete 4tec ski for $200? I'd be all over that. Buy them both and use 1 for parts.

+1 on those valves. I replaced mine in my 03 GTX S/C. They had less issues with the 155 and 185HP models as they spin slower, but it's not unheard of for those bad valves to fail. I bought Supertech valves for mine. Cost over $300, forgot exactly how much. Good news is, you can sell your old valves. Someone bought mine for $80 on ebay :)
