Ok guys I have owned my sportster 1800 since last September I think. I attempted to take it too the lake last year and one engine would not start... Thinking was a carb problem..... So cleaned carb, and run both engines on water hose at home Saturday... So my plan is to take it out this Saturday and see what it's going to do.... Both engines run fine on water hose.... Anything I should keep in mind water hose vs Lake??

On the hose, the idle will be considerably higher as compared to in water. I want to say it is like 300o RPMs vs 1200 RPMs or so. Other than that, there is not real difference between the two.

Well that's what I thought too... One engine idled high but other one did not. It idled normal

Before chasing any other issue... check the compress, and report back.
I Checked the compression last year when had same problem.... Cnt remember exactly whatnot was but it was consecutive with rest of them and in good operating range... It's doing some thing as last year. It will start without choke for couple seconds and then die..... I am going to change the gray line tomorrow morning on engine that doesn't run.... I changed one engine but not the other one.... I cleaned the carb last week,

Changed the gray lines on one engine and not the other or replaced the whole engine? Get rid of all the gray fuel lines all together or you will just be chasing problems.

Lol sorry. I changed the gray line on one engine but not the other one. I'm going to change the hose this morning and clean carb again

Ok so this is a run down... I bought the boat last year, took it out and passenger engine would not start.... So it was. Getting late in year so I went ahead and winterized it.... Last week I started working on it. I took both carbs off cleaned them, put a rectifier on passenger side engine, put it on water hose and it started just fine. Didn't idle up like normal but still started and responded to throttle great. Let it sit for 3 days and pulled boat out getting ready to go to lake this morning and would not start...... Driver engine works great, so this morning I'm going to switch the carbs over and see if she will fire up that way..... If yall need to see compression numbers I will do it again (no biggie). I done compression test 2 different times on both engines. Once when I bought boat and once after my last trip to lake. Any other ideas aside from carbs

Are you still running off the factory premix system or are you premixing your own gas? If mixing your own change the plugs cause they will foul quicker..I battled a carb issue for years on one engine till I finally gave up and ordered a new carb for $189...it ran beautifully after that...hopefully yours might just need a rebuild...try rebuilding it instead of cleaning...could be a couple of faulty parts...order a new needle and seat also if you decide to rebuild...clean the air silencers also....good luck

I'm premixing my gas. ... And a carb rebuild is in my future lol.... I went out there this morning and did not choke it and it fired right up. I let it run for 15 mins and not a hiccup

Guess I'm to get more plugs to carry with me lol

premixing is fine it just fouls the plugs quicker...as you idle or go through no wakes the ratio should be less that's what the premix system does...since you premix your gas it's getting full mix at all times...I would change my plugs at start of the season and then again in the middle of the season...I use to put lots of hours on mine...
Yea even on my 4-tech I carry spare plugs...carbs gotta be in top shape on these boats if you want them to run good and be worry free...check your plugs...should be little wet and chocolate color...white is no good...

Extra plugs in hand.... Ima give it a shot today and see how she does

Yea do that....I had the same issue on the exact same side also...I installed new external fuel pumps( the ones that sit above the motor on a bracket) didn't work either, rebuilt the carb myself several times and no good..had 2 dealers do it and same issue...so after spending about $400 I gave up and bought a new carb off eBay from California...bolted it on and ran perfect till I sold it...I still see the guy out on the water sometimes

Hopefully a carb rebuild will work. I noticed that the clear plastic diagram thing was missing! That could be my problem lol

New carb is around $200.

Best $400 I spend on the boat every so often (3-4 years). I have never been able to clean the carb to perfection. I have 6 rusted/horrid looking carbs in the garage to vouch for it.

Your model is single carb per engine. New carb and fuel pump goes a LONG way to make it all better. Watch for dirt/alcohol/water in gas. I added a spin on filters to my boat and my fuel issues have greatly diminished.

Ok I will keep a watch out for that.... The other engine starts up and runs perfect so I would think I have contaminated fuel. But worth a check
