Hey all

I'm finally getting ready to re-assemble my 1997 GTX after a top-end rebuild. I'm going through the shop manual and verifying all the sealants and other assorted fluids I'm going to need to do a proper re-assembly. I've already come across several suggestions of not using some of the sealants indicated in the manual; specifically I have been directed to use three bond 1211 sealant on the cylinders instead of the Loctite 515 (which I later learned was superseded by Loctite 518) which the manual indicates. I wanted to know if there were any additional suggestions for the following (both of these are used in reassembling the exhaust):

736 Heat Resistant Sealant
732 Clear Multi-purpose sealant

I searched on the web and apparently you can order over amazon, but I doubt I need a 300 ml tube for the small applications, and was hoping to find something equivalent that I could purchase in a more reasonable quantity.

Any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.

You can use either the 518 or 1211 on the head o-rings and either will be perfectly fine. Napa usually has the 518 on the shelf.

The exhaust gaskets and cylinder base gasket goes on dry with the exception of the large copper ring for the two pipe halves. That copper ring gets a coat of Permatex Ultra Copper RTV on each side and is also available at all auto parts stores.

The only part of the engine that takes a special sealant are the cases.

So not the 736 Heat Resistant Sealant indicated in the manual? That one I can get a hold of, as its a common sealant in aviation, and a buddy of mine who is a mechanic has vats of this stuff.
