Hello,

I am a new seadoo owner (1997 xp 787). The VTS does not work when I push the buttons on the handlebar, but when I hook the motor directly to the battery, it works fine, so the motor is good. Where should I look next?

There is a module that has two relays build into it. I think that there might be a fuse on this module. Check that and if there is one and it is good, the module could be bad.

meanwhile, set the trim just a hair above the middle of travel and it is in a good place for running. so many VTS's seem to die with trim all way up. ski is barely runnable like that.

Did you check the fuse in the electrical box. I think its a 15 amp that is all by its self just two red wires going to it.

The module with the relays is n top of where the motor is. It is sealed but black sealant. You should be able to trace the VTS wire back the VTS it self and see the Module on top. But as stated be for check the 7.5 amp fuse in the main electrical box.

I did some more trouble shooting this afternoon. I have found the module to be bad. The motor works, so I just hooked it directly to the battery, so I could lower the trim. Thanks for the help.

Is it worth buying a new vts? Also, I have a hole in my exhaust. It is on the piece that attached to the header. Can I buy that part itself, or do I have to buy the whole exhaust? Any suggestions as to where to purchase one and how much should I expect to pay?

When I got mine, the trim was stuck in full DOWN position, and seal was gone, and trim motor was full of salt water and corroded stuck. I unplugged it and used the Trim button to activate my bilge pump...

and drilled a couple holes in the jet nozzle and set this up for manual adjustment...

It wasn't worth it for me to sink big money into a new VTS motor.

But if your motor still works, price the module that you need and see what you think it is worth to you.

I keep my trim in the middle of the 3 holes, and only rarely have I moved it, just to see if I could get better flat out speed or faster takeoffs when jumping waves.

New parts can be purchased on the link at the top of this page, or through babbitts.com. Prices are pretty comparable. Used stuff can be had from eBay, but I wouldn't buy anything electrical other than new.

hey scoop...lol, thats cool pic of ski piss'n....did same to (used to have) sportster, tired of water, why..?, but backflush in thru bilge hole, and flood the boat, so plugged it up, and drilled on side, used a faucet flange look'n thing, hose connected perfecvt, white marine siliconed upt, walah....

Hate to get off topic, but mine was in a collision before I got it and there is a fast leak somewhere where the two pieces of hull connect. But I cannot find it. So instead of taking on 5 gallons an hour and having to pull the ski out to drain it (the bailers weren't working, and were actually sucking water IN TO the hull when I slowed down!!!) I added this $30 pump and wired it to the VTS buttons, and it sucks that 5 gallons out in about 60 seconds.

I mounted it high so it would hit me in the leg and I wouldn't have to look down to see when it was done pumping. I can feel the warm water hitting me on the leg and when I stop feeling it, I let off the button. I usually use it for about 10-15 seconds every 20 minutes to keep the hull dry. Especially when I am doing very hard maneuvers that either submarine it or get half the ski under water on a hard carve.

Thanks for the Kudos:cheers:

Enging is now blown

I have now owned my jet ski for a week. I took it out on Sunday to test the exhaust fix (which worked great) and the engine blew after 30 minutes on the water. I guess that is what I get for buying something 11 yrs old. I know what to look for next time.

Does anyone know where I can get a good deal on a rebuilt 787 engine? What can I expect to pay to have the ski fixed? I live in Richmond VA

Bummer--I'm in Richmond area too. Any clue what caused the problem.........too lean, oil pump issue??? I have a 97 SPX.

what went wrong

I think the bearing that the counterbalance shaft connects to seized. it threw off the shaft which blew away the bottom casing of the engine.

hokiebob

Hokiebob,

Where do you ride? I have only been out to Kingsland Marina, but my girlfriend says the water is too dirty. What other places are there within 1hr drive of the city?

I'm new to jet skii's and the Richmond area water. I've been on the Pamunkey river but thats it. I hauled it to the Outer Banks for Labor Day and rode in the sound, but you have to be careful for the seaweed--it'll clog the pump in a hearbeat (as I found out the hard way).
