Seadoo Sportser 1800 out of the hole cavitation.

This is the only seadoo boat I have ever been in so I am not sure if this is normal.

I belive my 1998 seadoo sportser 1800 is having a slight cavitation out of the hole issue.
When pulling a skier, full throttle from a stop, it will hit the rev limiter for maybe 2-3 seconds until it planes out.
Is this normal or should I expect it to thrust forward right away and not hit the limiter.


I have replaced wear rings and have new scat trak high pitch impellers.
If this is not normal I guess I'll replace the carbon seals next.

I did just replace one bad rear motor mount but have not been back into the water to see it this helps.

It's normall to have a little cavatation on the boats... but you can get rid of it if you really want.

The main thing is to make sure your carbon seals are good. When they wear, or the boot gets soft... the pumps can suck them back a little, and you draw air... and that causes the cavitation. So... you can try a couple things...

1) Some of the drive shafts (on the boats) have multiple clip slots for the stainless ring. You can push it back, and if you have any extra slot, just move the C-clip, and that should take care of the issue. (check pic at the bottom)

2) If you don't have the extra slot... try putting a couple big zip ties around the boot. They don't have to be super tight... but make them just tight enough to stay down in the valleys of the seal boot. It will help "Stiffen" the boot, and it won't let the pump suck it back.

I also have the same boat. My plane time sounds as same as yours. My wear rings were just replaced this year and carbon seal was adjusted as Dr Honda said.
 
Well no more cavitation at all. NONE! Moved the C clip back one on both shafts. Sealed the intake with silicone. and tighened up the motor mount plate to engine bolts. and I get ZERO cavitation out of the hole.

now the bad news, I am still getting more vibration out of one engine that I would like. It is also makeing more noise than my new SBT motor. It seems it's hard to crank once it shuts off and tents to foul up one plug with oil. Seems to still make good power I just know it's going to go out soon. I might run the #$%$ out of it until it kills one more starter or the season is over then swap it out with a new motor.

Well it made it through 2 lake trips. Last Saturday I killed not one but BOTH starters.


I had moved the orginal starter to the motor that has already killed 3 starters and installed a new one on the other.
The orginal starter died 1st when I was 5 miles away from the ramp. made it to the ramp and the motor stalled, went to crank it back up and nothing... I am very lucky to have even made it back to the ramp. when it would not start we had to jump out and push the boat to the ramp slighty upstream and there was a coal barge heading our way. made it out of the water just in time.

I have one good working starter left so as soon as I got home I installed it and the motor fired right up. Flushed out the engine and moved the starter to the other one it fired right up.

So now the question why have I killed 5 starters in less than 2 months?

Are they chinese SBT/Ebay starters?
 
The boat is not going back into the water again until I can find the cause of this.
anyone have any ideas as I am all out of them.
 
Take the 2 year old one and open it up or take it to a starter repair shop. Find out what broke/fried in the starter. It may lead you to the cause.
 
All grounds are good? Cranking amps on battery are high enough for that model?... Gotta be electrical issue.
 
Could your stater be statying engaged? It has to be that's the only way you could be burning them up that fast. Even a cheap starter would last longer that 6 hours, how many time did you start it in 6 hours. That would count for the extra noise from the engine and maybe the vibration. How could you eat 4 starters one engine that fast. Damn I have the same boat with 130 hours and still have the OEM starters on both engines.
 
I think I have resolved the vibration problem. I just opened up the last two starters were killed as the brush leads were burned out.
I am going to start a specific thread for this issue.
