Seadoo Hydro-Turf

This is my 1995 Seadoo xp 720 winter project. I will be working on mainly cosmetics(the new mats, seat cover, grips, handle cover, decals, rear grab handle) then maybe some small performance mods. I got it for cheap with a nice double trailer so I'm planning on buying an 800 in the spring if I can find one for a reasonable price. Today I removed the old mats and did a quickly cleaned up the surface. The new mats should be arriving tomorrow or Friday and I'll post the pics to show u guys how it looks.

Very cool, definitely share the pictures.. did you buy the turf through PWCMuscle.com to save 15% off the price?

Should be pretty nice when finished.
I heard that lighter fluid on the yellow cover around the handle bar might remove the black spots. or try Lacquer thinner.

yeah hopefully it all comes together nicely. About the handlebar cover, I tried everything, bleach, lighter fluid, and a bunch of other cleaners and nothing really completely got rid of the spots. I heard of this stuff called PlastDip that you can spray on and it just puts a layer of new rubber on. I saw the finished product on another thread it turned out looking great.

I just ordered it from ebay I think it came out to around 90 bucks. Wish i had known they had it on PWCMuscle with that discount!

If you lightly use blade to scrape after you apply the lighter fluid it will come off.
Did two of them and worked really well.

Otherwise sbt has black neoprene cover for 30 bucks and problem solved.
Don't paint it.

I bought the neoprene cover for my 96XP looks great. I painted the handlebar cover on my 96GSX but it's made from hard plastic, I don't think I would try to paint the XP, it would probably flake off.

Also for some reason, Dr Honda recommended it and it works, you need to use Zippo lighter fluid to get the mold off, used it on my 96GTI (similar cover to the 96XP). I had a hard time finding it, I had to order from Amazon, the shipping cost more than the fluid. Now I'm getting all kinds of recommendations for smoking stuff, I've never smoked but I guess now I'll have to start.

yup not charcoal lighter fluid but the zippo type lighter fluid.
You can get it behind the counter at cvs where they have the tobacco stuff/pipes.

Update

So i decided i had nothing to lose on trying to paint the cover since i had already ordered another cover. I didn't think it would turn out that well but it seems to be durable, not to sure how it will hold up to water.

You did it with the plastidip?
Looks good

Problem is when it flakes or peels.
But you can just re spray it.

I got blacks covers from SBT for 22 bucks when it was up for sale.

Looks Good.

I have same ski.
Just striped old purple HT off and getting black wishbone BT's.
Pick up another set for GTI.

My finger tips are hurting from sanding off old contact cement.

Also got some black CF vinyl to redo seat.

Thanks, yeah I'm hoping I wont have to replace the hydro-turf and it stays glued down. You mentioned your going to redo your seat, just wondering if you are going to just staple the new one on? or will you be using some sort of adhesive as well? I have some black vinyl on the way, I'm planning to redo the seat over the christmas break.

You should remove old cover first.
If you staple new cover over old one it slides..

I see that you removes the old mats. what are you using to plug all the old rivit holes with so you don't get a leak ?? Im doing the same thing but I don't know what to use for the holes.

Thanks
MTM

I used a marine 5200 adhesive sealant. It works very well I use it all the time and it works great. It is made by 3m and you can get it at Canadian Tire.

you could probably get away with any sort or waterproof silicon, the glue will also help seal the rivet holes.

Here are some pics of the new seat cover and hydro-turf....not stapled or glued down yet but gives an idea of how it should look.

I used a competitor Black Tip but pretty much the same stuff, they recommended five minute epoxy to fill the holes, so that's what I used, it worked well.
