So I’m in the process of taking my entire engine out. Can you guys give me tips on how to check if the crankshaft is bad? Also something seems to be leaking into the bottom case because when I take off the pulse line from the carb it shoots out a bunch of stuff. It doesn’t shoot gas or anything out of cylinders.thanks guys!

Before you go any further do some checks, give us more info.

Does the motor run right now?
Where, exactly, are you seeing this leak?

so got the jet ski. Motor wouldn’t start & I took it out & found that the rotary valve gear & the plate was bad. Replaced it got it back in. Compression 150 in both but it would take forever to start it. If I removed the pulse line from the carb and tried starting the engine , it would shoot out a bunch of gunk. Not sure what it was but as soon as i got it all out it would start. Soon after it starts and idles it fills up again. So I assumed something is leaking into the bottom. Fast forward 2 weeks, I got it to start and said I’m gonna go test this thing on the water & see what it does. After 10 mins of trying to get it started it does. Runs perfect. Got to 47 mph & it just randomly shuts off a few mins later. Compression in back cylinder is 60 now. I’m pretty close to just paying the money to have the entire thing completely rebuilt so when spring comes, I can be stress free

So either your rotary shaft seal is bad and leaking into the intake manifold or the inner crank seals are bad and you need a remanufactured crankshaft.

Easy way to tell is to pull the intake manifold and see if it leaks at the rotary shaft or fills up the crankcase to see what seal it is.

would a bad seal affect compression or does the top end probably need rebuilt now?

have the motor rebuilt if the cylinder is at 60bs compression chances are the machine still has the gray tempo fuel lines which were famous for clogging the screens in the carburetors and leaning out cylinders and burning down.you will also need to rebuild carbs and change all the fuel lines to black ones.next the crank seals at the rotary valves get weak and leak oil into the base of the motor causing it most likely to smoke a lot when it starts. if you do the above the 717 was one of the best 2 strokes seadoo made and are very reliable.
