I have recently bought a challenger 180 and I need to replace either the flywheel or stator or both. My battery is going dead everytime I use it alot and my motor has a noise that makes me think a magnet or pick up has come loose. The 30 amp fuse coming from unit was burned a little but has never blown. Do you have to pull motor to change out.

Check engine grounds first, should be able to measure the output just to be sure before having to tear apart. As far as doing in boat It would not be easy for experienced mechanic while in. Pulling will be best way. Take my advice and buy/ borrow the drive shaft tools. Sucks because they’re expensive but pain in the rear without. Also the flywheel bolts are 1-time use only stretch screws/ bolts. Make sure to buy new ones.

thank you for your reply, was wondering if I could do further damage if took boat out along with spare batteries? I am not yet wanting to stop using boat..

What’s the noise that’s making you think something came loose? If it’s making a noise that it didn’t before that’s a sign to stop and identify before. Sucks in summer because time is so short. I lost all of July rebuilding an engine.

Have you tried checking your regulator? way more likely for that to fail than a magnet..... Also reset the connectors and clean them out incase somehow that got loose, had it happen to me once.

What year is it and how many hours?

If you have a weird noise, i would bite the bullet and go investigate.

The other suggestions on grounds and others should be done first.

If you have a multimeter, check the voltage while running.

Like mentioned the regulator may be bad.
