Sea Doo XP - leaking water / rev'ing engine?

My in-laws borrowed a Sea Doo XP (1988 model I think) from some friends, it seemed to run well (I rode it 1/4 mile from the landing to the dock) then my mother in law tried to take it out and the engine would rev up but it wouldn't go anywhere. Seems like the drivetrain was slipping and it was taking on water.

I pulled the cover and there's a rubber hose covering what i assume to be the driveshaft. A hose clamp blew off and water was coming in. So I replaced the hose clamp with a new one and tried again. It ran fine until the clamp on the other blew free. So it appears to me that there's too much pressure inside the hose.
I can get pictures if that will help.

My in-laws friend was generous enough to loan us the PWC, and we'd like to get it back to him in as good or better shape then what we got it in.

thank you!

cliff notes: borrowed Sea Doo PWC, ran fine until the hose surrounding the drive shaft blew the clamps. runs fine when clamps are on, but too much pressure blows them off???

Use better clamps...the clamps on the boot are to keep water out. All seadoo's have the same boot and clamps. Use some muscle to tighten them with out ripping the rubber boot.
I hope this helps.

thanks Karl. I'm concerned it's the carbon ring or a misassembly of the jet pump (he has the engine rebuilt last year). If either of those issues are the case, is it likely the shaft is bent?

Should the OEM clamps blow off though?

You would feel a vibration, if it was bent. Be sure the clamps are in the proper place and tight. Check the fiberglass under the clamp area to see if it is cracked or broken off. If it is, use fiberglass cloth and resin to repair it. It might not have enough area to hold the clamps and boot in place.

I would think that it would suck rather blow. You say you think it is a 1988 maybe you mean 1998. If this ski is older than a 1996 I believe it may have bearings and a seal reather than a ceramic seal. If it is older and you do not grease the bearings they can lock up and spin the hose and all.
