Sea Doo Wont Turn OFF!

2000 GTI motor will NOT turn off -- continues to run even with lanyard key off key post! (Thankfully it has the gas knob on side so grandson could turn it to "off" -- that's the ONLY way we could stop the motor.)
Any ideas?? Repair shop says get a new MPEM, but also said motor sounds pretty bad (loud).

It could be the lanyard post is not working properly. I haven't heard of a bad mpem causing that kind of problem. As far as the engine "sounding pretty bad"
Is it just loud, or a knock...I would do a compression test to see what the internals of the engine is doing first. If its just loud, maybe the exhaust has a problem with a broken stud or bad exhaust clamp.

Previously it was cutting out while the grandson rode it (maybe over rough water?). So then the mechanic put a new key post on it and it worked fine for a short while. It makes the connection OK to start it.

Forgot to address the motor: not knocking, much louder than the 2002, alot of smoke 1st 3-5 min it runs, very poor gas mileage compared to the 2002. Have had it in for servicing last year and this but they didn't mention "motor" until the discussion of needing to replace the MPEM.

I have considered buying MPEM off e-bay....
