sea doo starting problem

Hi i have a 1997 sea doo xp. It has always giving me trouble starting. I have to hold the start button and pull choke for lengthy amount of time to start. I took it out the other day and was holding the start button for lengthy time. And when i let go it was still trying to start. So i pulled the kill switch key and it still continued in trying to start itself. So i ripped off the seat and disonnected the negative wire from the battery so it would stop. Now even when the key is out and i touch nothing. I can touch the negative wire to the battery and it will continue in trying to start itself. I looked for the starter thinking there might be a bad connection but couldnt find it. I work on cars and bikes all the time but the marine thing is new to me. So i am not completely ignorant with motors. But any thorough advice would be greatly appreciated. P.s. i need to get it to where atleast you can plug in the key without it trying to start itself before my dad gets home. Thank you very much.

Follow the Positive+ wire from the battery to the electrical box. Remove the cover and you will see where the Red+ wire goes to the starter solenoid. Chances the starter solenoid is bad or the start switch is causing it to keep turning over. The small wire on the solenoid is from the start button. If you disconnect it, and it still keeps wanting to turn over, it is the solenoid. If you replace the starter solenoid the problem of it wanting to start will be done. As for the bad starting problem, Have you tried replacing the spark plugs?

I hope this helps.

Keep us posted.

Ok so i tried looking up the oem part real quick to see the cost on it. And when you say starter solenoid do you mean the Ignition coil or starter relay? thank you.

remove the box in front of the battery, take the two red wires of the little black thing(selenoid) connect the black wire, it shouldnt try to start. tap the solenoid try reconnecting the wires. if it stopped its time for a new solenoid but chances are thats what it is, i havent had one yet that the switch stayed open on a DESS.
