No, the repair shop replaced it and told you it was faulty. I'd trust the guy you bought if from before I'd trust the shop you just had replace it.
There is a test you do in the advanced diagnostic mode that will tell you if the MPEM is bad. Chances are, when it's dead, it's dead. There isn't really any warning. But, the mpem has several functions. Like the delay timer. This can stop working, but the mpem continue to fire the engine.
