I have a 1996 Challenger. Can anyone give me information on whether the mpem has warning signs, such as intermittent starting, before it need replacing?

What other problems are you experiencing? It could be a dirty DESS post or maybe a bad wire connection.

Took it to the repair shop who confirmed it was the mpem. Trying to determine if the person I bought the boat from would have known if it was failing. It started when he showed me the boat, but started only a few times while it sat in our driveway after I got it home.

Repair shop.........

No, the repair shop replaced it and told you it was faulty. I'd trust the guy you bought if from before I'd trust the shop you just had replace it.

There is a test you do in the advanced diagnostic mode that will tell you if the MPEM is bad. Chances are, when it's dead, it's dead. There isn't really any warning. But, the mpem has several functions. Like the delay timer. This can stop working, but the mpem continue to fire the engine.

MPEM, is acronym for Multi-purpose electronic module. Keyword, "multi".
