Wrong engine in Speedster SC

I went to purchase a 2007 Speedster 150 with the Supercharged engine and found that the boat does not have the supercharger. It is marked as a 215 HP on stern, has only 6 hours of use and the owners do not know anything about engines. BUT on the bill of sale from the dealer, North Jax Motorsports in Jacksonville, FL. It is listed as a Super charged. Even has the Supercharged engine cover. BUt there is no Supercharger on the engine.
I was wondering if this has happened before. If it was Sea Doo or if anyone has heard of this happening before. The boat is truly brand new, has only 6 hours of use, and you can tell, it has not had an engine change. IT is as it came.
The owners are contacting Sea Doo tomorrow and the dealer. I just wanted to know if this has happened before or if anyone knows of anythign like this happening.

wow...that's interesting!!! Wonder what the dealer will say?? lol I take it you didn't buy the boat?? How much were they asking for it??

Suspicious

6 hours in 3 years, something happened to that boat and the engine had to be replaced, and the owner decided not to spring for the supercharged replacement ($8000 vs. $ 11,000). Could be as simple as blown first engine due to improper break in, replaced at owner cost. However also look for signs of sinking (water stains high on inside walls etc). North Jax Motorsports has been selling bargain basement deals for awhile, repos and the like. If the engine was replaced recently you may be better off than having an engine which sat idle for 3 years and got corroded.

Very good point.....definitely sounds like something fishy is going on!! I doubt that Seadoo or even the dealer which has to do a pre-purchase inspection for the warranty would not catch onto a non-supercharged engine being installed. I think Unclejay hit it right on the head....!! Good thing you knew what to look for and saved yourself a huge headache because I can guarantee they will sell that boat to some poor sucker just getting into the sport and has no idea. too bad there wasn't anyway of reporting it so that any future purchaser wouldn't get burnt!!

No, it is the original engine

I know these people, they are in the Military and after buying the boat had two tours in Iraq, one in Afganistan, and one in Korea. The boat has been in his wifes Parents garage for 3 years. They run it twice a year just to make sure everything was working well on it. IT is the orginal engine. You can tell the boat is brand new. Inside and out, even smells new under the cover. After doing some reseach today, they found out that the boat was not suppose to be a supercharged boat, but Sea Doo put the wrong decals on the boat and engine at the factory and the dealer sold it as a supercharged boat. The owner is waiting to see what the dealer and the Sea Doo rep. can do about it. At the least they should be refunded the differance they paid when they bought it for a supercharged one as compared to a regular one.

I really don't understand how the boat got through the pre-purchase inspection from the dealer, they have to go through it top to bottom and would of known that it wasn't a supercharged boat...!!

I would think enough complaing to the higher ups at BRP would get you a new supercharged 2010 boat.

wrong engine

This is not the only story like this.

This is a post from MLaFirst from this forum:

"He's a funny story. I had the same problem so I took my 150 into Hamn Motorsports to see why the damn thing was so slow. It turns out, there's no supercharger OR intercooler on my boat. Looks like a mistake right from Seadoo, stickers say 215 and it even has "supercharged" on the motor, just no actual unit. I even had a 500 dollar 10 hour inspection ... how they missed that is beyond me but I'd ensure you have an actual supecharger on the boat. As for everyone else ... what should I do??? I have yet to hear back from Seadoo. Do I l;et them put a sc on it or do I demand a new boat. That 10 hour break in was a bitch!"

He had a whole thread about this problem somewhere. Eventually BRP made it right but it did take a little while.

I thought I remembered someone else having this problem. I would complain till I got a whole new boat.

The things dealers do:rolleyes:
My father-in-law just bought a new ride-on mower and it was 'having trouble' cutting the grass.
The dealer brought the mechanic out to set up the mower properly and do all the adjustments.Still no good.
THREE HOURS later and a heap of frigging around and they found the problem. The discs inside the cutting deck had no blades bolted on.
Just proves that you don't have to have a long neck to be a goose.

Sea Doo help

The first phone call to Sea Doo and they were told that it is a Dealer problem and the dealer has 30 days to return a product if they are not happy with it. In this case the Dealer has sold out and the new Dealer is not even a Sea Doo dealer anymore. SO my question is Who DO THEY NEED TO CALL at SEA DOO BRP to get some help. This is the same story that happened to the other guy almost to a T.
DOES ANY know of the right person to contact at Sea Doo BRP.

Hate to say it... but it's time to get a lawyer involved. But... since you aren't the original buyer, you may be SOL. All Bombardier has to say is that the original owner modified the boat. Also, they have the dealer's check list, and time on their side.

Honestly, you would be better off trying to get the old owner to take it back.

Just my 2 cents.

So did you end up actually purchasing the boat from the sellers?? If so, since your not the original owner of the boat I think your SOL!! If you didn't buy the boat be glad and keep looking...!!

No not yet

I am not the owner yet. I found the problem when went to purchase and pick it up. I have gotten to know the owners very well and feel for them and was hoping to find a solution to help them out. I am still considering purchasing the boat as a NC simple due to the fact the boat is in such great shape. No joke it is just like a brand new one. They purchased it in May 07, used it for a month, has 6 hours on it, and were sent to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea for the last 3 years. The boat has been in her parents garage under cover. I bid the boat up to 10,700 on ebay and won it, but will not give them a bad feed back score. After all, they are the ones being screwed in this deal. I am giving them time to see if they can get any help from Sea Doo or the dealer before purchasing it.

K...I understand now..lol

To be honest, I also own a 2004 sportster with the 4tec 155HP N/A engine and it performs very nicely!! I used it mainly with me, my wife and 2 toddlers and was able to hit 50mph no problem. Getting out the hole was also pretty decent, just noticed if you had another adult along for the ride it would start to cavitate a little when getting started...but nothing that a Solas impeller would fix!!

What pricing do you think you could offer for the boat??

Reply

The Dealer is now offering to buy the boat from them for what the price it hit on Ebay, the Dealer believes he can sell the boat for a higher price. And they are not to happy the only thing the dealer wants to do about the problem is a solution that has the dealer making even more money on the deal. So if I do decide to take the boat, and I do have first choice, it would be for the price I bit it up to. And if the dealer is offering them that, it must be worth more. I really like the boat, it is truly in new condition. And I found with a few hundred dollars in mods, I can bring her top speed from 50 to 56 mph and that is fast enough. I basically want the boat to do trips on shallow rivers and trips in the Keys so the NA engine will probably give me better range anyway. I just have to decide if I want it at that price if they can not get any help from Sea Doo.
I also will advise to stay away from North Jax motor sports in Jacksonville, Florida! NOT a good dealer to deal with in my opinion.

As a Seadoo sport boat dealer we are disappointed in the business practices of some dealers especially since the economic meltdown and won't comment on what should or should not have been done. HOWEVER, if anyone wants to know what their boat should be equipped with just give us the VIN number. It takes a few minutes to find out out how the boat was supposed to be equipped originally. We have been selling Seadoo boats and watercraft since each came out in 1994 and 1988. We have only seen one mislabled boat and that was a PWC with a wrong decal. Again, as a service to all sport boat owners we would be happy to ease your mind with respect to what you thought you purchased. Contact knseeber@comcast.net, good luck and Happy Dooin'!

I was hoping to see a follow-up with this. I hope seadoo did the right thing and bought the boat back or at least paid the differance in value.

Not al all

Seadoo would do nothing at all. After doing a lot of research. What happened is several of these boats were built with the wrong labels put on them. All but two dealers caught the mistake. Those two dealers where in Jacksonville Florida and San Diego. California. The dealer in California found out about the problem and worked with sea doo to correct it. Bought back the boat. The Jacksonville dealer nor the customer knew of the problem until the customer went to sell the boat three years later the dealer was out of business and sea doo refused to admit they ever had a problem. Sea Doo said they have never made a mistake labeling one and refused to do anything. So I bought the boat thinking g I was getting a supercharger. Found out when I opened the-compartment I did not have one. but bought it at a reduced rate anyway. The original owners tried and tried to get help from sea doo. SeaDoo treated them very badly. Refused to do anything. And with no dealer to go after. They are out the extra money they paid for the boat.

I don't mean to be a jerk on this matter,

But I wish I had the reverse problem, like they sold me a supercharger by mistake with the super charger bolt it on, but it didn't say supercharged on it... How come we couldn't get that problem?

Also by the look of things, are you guys suggesting that the supercharger is something that just bolts on? Funny that the boat could leave the factory completely as a supercharged version but they forgot to install the supercharger? Ummm

Also if you got it for $10,700 that was a pretty good deal

No, the boat was built as a none super charged model, the only thing that was done wrong at the factory was they put the supercharger stickers all over the boat and the inter-cooled one on top of the engine cover. Then the dealer sold it as a supercharged model with the higher price. The people that bought it originally didnt have a clue what they were buying. I am very happy with it not being supercharged as I dont have to carry the extra fuel cans my friends do and we all do run the same speeds, after all when you get above 40 it beats the hell out of you. LOL
But no there are a lot of other changes than just a super charger bolted on, like lower compression with different head, larger jet tunnel, intercooler and many other changes.
Plain and simple the original buyers were screwed out of the extra money the dealer ripped them off of, and that dealer is out of business now. So they are out of their additional money for supercharged and Sea Doo wouldnt do anything to help them out, not even send them the correct decals to go on the boat.
