Hi All!

What would cause the Rotary Vale gear to 'strip'?

My first stripped valve was due to interference/jamming between the valve and housing.

Second time is unknown. Gear is somewhat stripped and the spring is all screwed up.

Is this common to the 717 720?

The boat is a 1997 Speedster and this will be the second time in a month to tear it down.

Can the gear/shaft assembly go back in without splitting the cases? It came out without doing so.

I think you need to split the case in order to remove the metal fragments of a stripped gear, and make sure the lower bearing isn't contaminated. Otherwise the risk of repeat failure is higher.

Sounds like the assembly might not have been done correctly in your case, if the spring twisted and became mangled, sounds like.
