Hi, I have recently purchased a 97 HX and it's great. A friend of mine has the same one which he bought cheap as it had a blown bigend. He has recently rebuilt the engine and after taking it for it's first run, the brand new 14 tooth helical gear that drives the rotary valve had completely stripped after 10 mins of running in. His ski has had the oil injection removed as opposed to mine and after some brainstorming, we have realised that the 14 tooth gear has no lubrication. Am I right in saying that this gear is usually lubricated by the oil pump and if the ski is modded to run premixed fuel, the part of the crankcase housing the gear needs to either be filled with oil or run and external reservoir and still use the pump? please help. thanks

Yah, your right. Even though you switched to premix, the rotary assy still needs to be lubed/oiled continously, thus, leave'n the resivoir tank in and "all lines" that supply oil to the case. Only line needs blocking/removed is the line with filter in it, supplying oil to the pump...

Thanks for the quick reply.

What are our options since the Ski has been purchased with the oil tank already removed? obviously buying a new tank ,but is there a cheaper alternative such as filling the center crankcase with oil and if so to what level. (half way or fully submerging the drive gear)?

There should be a fitting on each side of the engine for the rotary gear bath. On my SPX there is a line running from one side to the other and its filled with oil. You may need some sort of pump to fill the bath and connect the line insuring its full. This will just cycle the oil through the line while the engine is running and you can flush it whenever you feel it may be dirty, say every season if your picky. I would also suggest useing Clear line so you can see the oil and check it.
