Just bought the jet ski and took it out for the first time. Its a 98 GTI 717. Was going great then bogged down, loss of power and there was a more than normal amount of smoke coming from the back. I don't exactly know what normal is but it was more than my 2 stroke snowmobile. Anywho, it was towed to a marine mechanic who told me it was missing and backfiring which he said meant the rotary vavle gears were bad (without looking at them). It would turn over and almost start and then after a few times tyring that it would not start at all. So...Before I had done anything to the motor I noticed the Temp Sensor on top between the spark plugs was bad. So, now I go to take the motor apart and damaged the gen. coil and lighting coil behind the fly wheel while removing the f.w. I get to the rotary valve but had not removed it. I lifted the crank shaft a bit and could see that the brass gear on the r.v. was good so it wasn't that. Now I'm having the dilema of "what the hell else could it be!?" Hope this helps all you who were trying to figure out what we were talking about and hopefully someone might have some insight on what my problem could be.
