Anyone know how to check the starter solenoid? Was in the process of firing up the engines and all I get on right engine is a click. Thinking maybe the solenoid but not sure could be a bad connection however it ran fine last time I was out at the lake. It has not been started for at least a month until today, left engine turns over fine. switch starter button connection to rule out the start switch, checked all fuses, battery is good cranks over second engine fine, all cables seem to be making good contact only thing left to check is the solenoid.

If you are getting a click... then the wiring is probably OK. Put a volt meter on the side of the solenoid that goes to the starter, and have someone hit the starter button. If you get 12v... then it's ok. If you don't... the internal contacts are gone, and it needs replaced.

If you do get 12v... then I would start by cleaning all the connections on the cables, and if that doesn't work... you need to pull the starter, and rebuild it.

Do you have two battery's?

I only have on motor in my boat but dropped in a second battery and WOW what a difference in cranking. Spins that motor like a top. I did have a single battery and it was a brand new 690 cranking amp battery.

Don.

Thanks, Dr. Honda I'll try that. It's kind of odd because it was cranking fine just over a month ago, I was at the lake matter fact.

Dono, I was thinking it might be the battery because the second engine was cranking over slow. I think the battery might need replacing, I'm taking it to autozone to have it tested.

You can also check the solenoid by jumping across the terminals, Battery side to Starter side, with a pair of pliers. If the starter turns over then solenoid is probably bad.

Ok, I tried the test Dr. Honda suggested and everything looks good. Starter needs a rebuild or good cleaning, it was fine just a month ago I guess just letting it sit around gets corrosion on the contacts inside. I gave the starter it few blows with the hammer in the rear part of it, and guess what the engine turned over but just for about one second or two. It seems like there's carbon dust or corrosion inside not letting turn over correctly. I'm going to disassemble it and clean it, from the parts breakdown it looks like a DC motor. So maybe I won't have to buy or rebuild it. Thanks guys for all your input.
