Riding Style(s)

I didn't want to embarrass anyone so I just thought I would start a new thread, but what prompted this thread was an incident on another thread.

I have noticed that my riding style has changed over the years. I don't like to use the words getting older, but as I mature more I find that I am "hot dogging" less and cruising more. I still like to jump wake occasionally, but what I really enjoy most is just cruising, by myself especially when the lake is not crowded. At a moderate speed, 35-40mph. I have the luxury of having a flexible work schedule and go the the lake, just by myself in the middle of the week.

We went to the lake yesterday, the weather forecast was for rain, so most people didn't go out. It turned out to be a beautiful day, warm but not hot. Anyway I headed up to the other end of the lake, I found this spot and took a couple of pictures.

I find myself rushing through life, but sometimes its nice just to take it easy, I'm not going bore anyone, but I was just wondering if anyone else out there feels this way.

As a side benefit I find I'm doing less repairs to my watercraft, mostly just routine maintenance.

Lou

Thats a great picture Lou!

I'm at WOT all the time it seems like!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be 50 in December.

I fully understand where Lou is coming from. I love that my ski hits 72 mph any day of the week. But also love that I can operate at 40 mph just cruising around and barely work the engine.

Thus far, nothing more than oil changes and winterization. Much more affordable than repairing them,,,

I think Lou included the pic of the waterfall to see if anyone to wants jump it? ..... :)

BTW nice shot Lou. It looks like a much more enjoyable lake than my boring one.

Really cool pic Lou. What happened to Sheridan???

I had to make an emergency run to the lake thurday due to some minor basement flooding, walked outside at 9PM and there are some folks on a pontoon in the channel out back, ended up hopping on board and having a few beers and made some new friends. Really needed that relaxation!!

Hey Griz, good to see ya back, although I ain't been around much lately myself.

LOL SDB, that was my first thought... "if I get up enough rpm i could pop right over that thing" lol

but seriously...

my style has changed as well, somewhat....

I've always been somewhat of a Swamp Rat, a term that the northerners use for us Florida boys that will drive 45 minutes to launch at the river when the beach is 20 minutes the other direction. It baffles them.

So I love river cruising, BUT i'm also a huge lover of what we call "twisty's" tight, twisty river runs where shore to shore its quite narrow and you cruise at around 75% throttle, avoiding the occasional log, sandbar, or oncoming boat. stop for a quick chug of liquid beverage then start up again. the return trips to the ramp generally end up around 90% throttle, pushing it a little harder.

Northern Peace River near brownsville, Kissimmee River, all have excellent twisty runs, and the St John's has been on my list for a couple of years.... you could go slow and enjoy the moss hanging from the tree's, but usually that's only so you can finish your can of beverage before hitting the throttle again.

this is not my video, but I do get passed in it at 2:10 like i'm standing still (and I was going 50 at the time), it will give you an idea of what I consider a good river run :) skip ahead to about 1:30 to get to the actual riding.

When i'm ready to start cruising around at 25mph its time to buy a boat.

With all that said, now that i'm 46, I used to look for small craft advisories and go out on all of those days, not I see that report and stay home :( so hopping over medium to heavy chop all day isn't fun for me anymore, but I still love to jump wake.

I don't really enjoy going out on my own, I tend to like having at least one other ski out with me, which is why I have a 2 place trailer :) Usually there's a group of 4-6 skis and every now and again a boat thrown in there (every other weekend since April so far)

I love jumping wake, and speed runs, we always try to play it safe and give plenty of space between other boats

On the flip side, when exploring larger lakes like Nacimiento, or rivers like Havasu, we tend to do a mix of having fun jumping around, and exploring 'the narrows'

Awesome pic! I like cruising with my kids on board exploring, but also enjoy scaring the hell out of them jumping wakes and slinging around :P

I feel ya Lou, I was actually just thinking about this when I stumbled upon your thread. I am only 23, but have been riding Seadoo's for years now and my style has changed. A few years ago it was about jumping wakes and full throttle runs, but as of late it seems that whenever I go to the lake, someone always wants to ride with me but I hesitate because I got two XP's, the 96 and 97, and they really are just no good for 2 up riding, and more and more I find that I just like cruising the shorelines looking at scenery with the occasional burst of speed.

Im seriously thinking about selling both of my XP's, even the 96 which isnt even completed yet, and getting into something like a 97 GTX. 50 mph is plenty fast for me, and I know the 787 like the back of my hand and it would be really nice to let others ride the ski without worrying about them flipping it over, or doing crazy stunts. Ugh Im getting old... or you know, throw a good looking girl on the back and not looking like a fool cuz the ski is way too small for 2

Hi Chris,

23 huh, I would say you've got knowledge well beyond your years.

Don't tell anybody but I'm thinking about picking up an early model GTI 4-tek in the fall for a winter project. I'm not going to get rid of may other ski's, but my wife might have other plans.

Our dock is on the busiest part of the lake and the last 3-4 miles before the no-wake is a killer, it just beats the crap out of you.

Ooooh nice. I too would like a 4 stroke, but the simplicity of these 2 strokes is something that I just love! I give all of the credit of my knowledge to this forum, I was a total noob when I first joined here, blew an engine on my GSX after i bought the ski w/o testing compression or knew what the grey fuel lines were or how to clean the carbs, or the raves, or repair the water regulator, or trim back spark plug wires, or to use synthetic oil, yada yada yada! This place is just a huge wealth of knowledge and has gotten me some pretty good deals on some fixer upper skis now!

My knowledge is all 2-stroke also, but we were all new to 2-strokes and like it or not 4-teks are the future, so it's time to learn.

I think we've kinda hijacked this thread, but what the hay, it's my thread.

BTW, I rebuilt that pump, all new parts, also used a SBT white wear ring, works great. The wear ring is an experiment, but so far it is working great, I like the concept of the wear ring being one piece, but time will tell.

Hey Loudoo...where was that picture taken? I live in the general area and that looks like a good spot to check out.
