Reverse Gate for 1996 Sportster

So I bought a 1996 Sportster a few weeks ago. After leaving the dock last weekend I noticed it was hard to shift to drive from neutral. I managed to muscle it into gear and it seemed to work okay.

After zipping around the lake for a bit, I slowed down, shifted back to neutral but noticed it was still tracking forward. I tried reverse... still moving forward. So I walked back and took a look and to my dismay, the reverse gate was gone! The support is still intact and nothing seems missing from it. It seems it may have been loose and worked its way off the support?

Anyway my question is:

The OEM reverse gate for a 96 Sportster is almost impossible to find. Has anyone replaced this with a challenger or speedster reverse gate? Would it fit or function the same? Or am I stuck trying to find a rare and obsolete part?

I have noticed a couple of reverse gates on ebay for 96 speedsters lately which should be exactly the same as the sportster.

You have the aluminum reverse gate, same as the 1995 Sportster.

96 Sportster 271 000 440 Gate - Reverse
96 Speedster 204 170 009 Gate - Reverse R.H. 204 170 008 Gate - Reverse L.H.
96 Challenger 271 000 483 Gate - Reverse
97 Sportster 271 000 483 Gate - Reverse
97 Challenger 271 000 483 Gate - Reverse
95 Sportster 271000440 (OBSOLETE) GATE-REVERSE

The 440 gate is narrower than the 483 gate so it will not fit. I don't know if there are any other plastic reverse gates that will fit.

The 1995 Speedster is also the 271000440 Gate

I found a new one here... http://www.speedsupplies.com/parts/bombardier-271000440.htm

$361.67 Ouch! Just because it is listed is no guarantee they have it, would need to ask them.

Yes $361.67 is at least a few hundred more than I would like to spend. Maybe I'll try replacing the support and gate together with a 483? I was told it would prob work as all seadoo 140mm pumps are the same? Thoughts?

I would try and find a used one that is the same 1995-96. The 483 would fit on the pump but I think you would have trouble getting the cables to work (wont line up properly)

I found this... (With a few mods) http://www.**************/forums/showthread.php?t=64724

I guess they would not let me link to that other site, so here is the info:

I know this is an old request without any answer.. but I have the answer! I have a 95 speedster and lost the gate too! USE THREAD LOCK!

cast aluminum not offered and very expensive. I have 2 657x motors and found that 1999 98, 97 sea doo gtx has a plastic gate and bracket. fits almost perfect for a very low used price off of ebay! just have to use longer bolts to attach ( plastic is thicker then the metal) and use a washer or two to shim out cable to clear movement of gate. I had to use the 99 bolt that connects the ball joint to make it clear gate. works perfect! bought the whole gate/bracket for 39 buks off of ebay. Everybody said IT WONT WORK! but it does! I imagine a lot of these can be changed over too. I took a chance and found out it works well! I am going to buy another and then sell my starbard side oem 1995 sea doo speedster reverse gate complete with bracket. I suspect it will pay for whole project.
