resealing 717 crank case

Hello All,
I had to split the case on a 717 engine to replace the PTO side rear seal.
When reassembling the two halves of the case, the manual suggests loctite 515. However, I understand there may be better flange sealant alternatives.

So I have a couple questions:
1. What is the best flange sealant to put the crank case back together?
2. Should any sealant be used on the outer edge of the PTO or MAG side seals, where the seal meets the case?
3. Should any sealant be used on the outer edge of the seals on the crank that seal off the rotary valve cavity? Obviously I am not replacing those and I'm worried about them resealing properly during reassembly.
4. Should any work be done to the rotary valve shaft since the engine is apart and split? Like new seal or bearings? Or is this not area not prone to failure?

I think that is it for now, thanks in advance for you help!

There are better case sealants out there, Mikidymac is the one to talk with about which one.

You should not need, or, use any sealant on the crank seals where they contact the case halves.

If you have any questions on the RV shaft seals then replace them, it's not difficult.

When you do drop the cases together make sure as you set one on the other that you give the RV shaft a slight spin so the shaft splines mesh. I have seen one case half "hammered" on by hand because it didn't drop into place. The hammering bent one of the brass gear teeth and the motor lasted ten minutes before the gear failed. I always spin the crank one full revolution by hand, at every step in the reassembly, to make sure things are going together right.

If you have it apart replace all the seals including the rotary seal and inspect all bearing are smooth and quite.

For case sealant I only use ThreeBond 1184 but Yamabond and Hondabond are the same thing. Some use 1211 but I feel 1184 si better on metal to metal with gasoline.

Make sure you use the correct sealant and grease on the bolts per the manual.
