Replacing Jet Pump Housing

Hi Everyone,

Does the engine need to be lifted up to remove the jet pump housing on a 2003 Utopia? If so, can anyone recommend an engine hoist to do so?

Thanks in advance!

If you want to remove the entire pump (and gear box) then yes. Basically... the pump goes in the bottom of the hull... then there is a gasket, and a top plate that holds it to the hull. Then the engine mounts to the top of the gear box.

I use a standard 2ton shop crane. Keep the chain short... and it should work.

Does a portable hoist (shop crane) need any modifications? I'm not looking to completely remove it just want to raise it enough to remove the pump. Is this an easy task? Thanks!

On your boat... it should just work. On the Islandia... I needed an extra 8" or so, to get to the center of the engine.

Personally... I would just take the engine out. You really can't set the engine back down on the fiberglass... and it will be in your way while trying to get the pump out. AND... if there is a problem with the crane... and the engine drops... it could get ugly.

It's not hard to take the engine out (it's easier than a Rotax) But it will take a little time.

Basically, you will:

1) disconnect the throttle cable
2) disconnect the steering assist cable
3) disconnect the oil hose. (and cap it)
4) disconnect the fuel hose
5) disconnect the battery cables
6) disconnect the electrical. (one big cord)
7) disconnect the exhaust hoses.
8) take off the bolts around the base of the engine

From there... it will lift out.

FYI... the exhaust hoses are going to be the biggest pain. They are simple, in the fact that it's just a clamp... but the rubber is stiff, and it could be stuck to the flange if they've never been apart.
