Replace motor or rebuild

Good morning,
I’m new here and new to the Seadoo world so bear with me please.
I bought a 04 seadoo GTI LE guy said carb just needs to be rebuilt brought it home pulled carb off and yes it was very bad inside so I bought the rebuilt kit from the dealer and rebuilt the carb replaced the fuel lines and inline filter pulled tank out and cleaned that out as well.. after doing all that it would only start and idle ( very rough ) so I pulled the new plus out and the rear plug was wet I checked for spark and I had spark ran a compression check 118 front cylinder and 80 in the rear.. so my question really is not nowing any history on this motor should I replace it with a new motor or just do a top end .. if I replace the motor with a new one who’s out there that sells good motors. We’re only keeping this for another 2 summers then going to sell..

That really depends on a number of things, are you mechanically inclined? Able to rebuild the top end yourself? Have the tools which are few but you would need a good torque wrench, and some everyday wrenches, sockets etc. Some feeler gauges. Not required but a good Mitutoyo outside caliper and dial bore gauge would be nice just to verify bore diameter, piston to cylinder wall clearance. I just don’t trust any machine shops yet, without checking there work. It should cost you around 500.00 to do a top end in it, 199.00 for the rebuild kit from OSD Marine, 100.00 a hole to have the cylinders bored and honed to spec. And 100.00 for incidentals because there always there, always. Not sure who you could use as a machine shop or who you could use to do the work for you either, those people are hard to find, and especially finding a shop that knows these machines. If your not mechanically inclined and/or your goal is to ride and enjoy a machine at a lower cost, maybe selling it before you invest to much time and effort might be the best route? You should be to get 200.00 for it as it alone as it sits and maybe a little more if the graphics and seat are in good shape, 600.00 if your selling it with a trailer and then buy a good running machine, probably in the 1200.00 area (1600.00 on a trailer). I’ve heard a ton on f bad things about SBT, crap work. I’ve heard bad about SES, over a year to get your engine back. I’ve heard good things about a fellow named Peter Rucinsky, try searching that name on Facebook?

1. Download a shop manual.

I don't really believe those compression readings other than one is higher that the other by a lot. Sounds like a top end is in order. The GTI we got had been sitting for 8 years. Cleaned the carb and it ran but like crap. Smoked a lot. It barely moved across the water for a while. Then it seemed like the rings broke free or something and it started running pretty well. We had a summer of fun. Later in the fall I checked compression and it said 110 PSI on both, which is impossibly low, but it ran OK.

I was going to do a top end. However after doing a pressure test I found the rear crank seal was badly leaking so I decided to do the whole engine. After looking at options on rebuilding the entire engine, I went with a BRP short block 421000097. What you get for $1300 (there is a core charge too of $700) is an engine that has been re-sleeved with standard pistons and all factory parts. Also you get a factory warranty from a real company. No shipping involved since a dealer had one on the shelf 10 miles from my house. After buying a seal kit, a new rotary valve cover and valve, other bits, and pump maintenance stuff I was out $1600. I had basically a new engine in it in two weeks. I could have had it done in a couple easy days but had to wait on shipping on some parts. I did have pullers and torque wrenches and stuff so I didn't need to buy any tools other than a PTO/impeller tool. Was it smart to put $1600 into a $1 nice looking ski with a trailer? Who knows but at least I trust the engine now.

Do a top end. Find a local shop to bore the cylinders. I use WSM piston kits. Not a big job and you can leave the engine in place.

New here and trying to ask a question and it’s wanting me to add recipients but not sure how or who to add??

Are you trying to send a Private Message? if so you just type the name of the person or "click" on the name of the person you are trying to contact.

What compression tester are you using?. There is a substantial difference between the cylinders. I've had low compression numbers but the engine would still start and idle smoothly. Just won't start in the water. Sounds like you definitely need a new top end. Watch a youtube video on how to test your rectifier and trim back your spark plug wires by a 1/4"
