Recommended Oil for 4Tec SCIC Engines

I have a 2007 Speedster with the 4tec SCIC engine. The owners manual states NEVER to use synthetic oil in the SCIC engines and recommends using XP-S 10W-40 4-stroke oil BRP P/N 219 700 346. I just had my boat serviced and they gave me a can of the remaining oil not used. The oil they used is XPS Summer Grade synthetic blend oil, the can references both P/N 293 600 121 and PKG No. 219 701 364. Should I take my boat back and have the oil changed to a non-synthetic blend?
 
Never mind.....I found the answer to my questions in a posting dated Oct '09. I'm a newbie here and still learning how to view the postings...
 
Hi SimiEd -- what did you find? For the newer steel SC washers is the current alternative to BRP's recommended oil still the Amsoil 10W40 Marine synthetic product? I know that's what was being floated back in the ceramic days as a safe alternative to the BRP oil, and it's what I was planning to use.

Hey Huttcraft. I'm not sure whether different oil is used for steel vs ceramic SC washers, but Seedoosnipe wrote back on 10/27/09 "Wow, ....I don't know how I missed it but yes, it's usable in all 4-TEC engines including the supercharged. It's about dog gone time........synthetic is all I use in everything I own, even my chainsaw (o.k., it came with it when I bought it.....LOL). Anyone looking to purchase and switch to the Semi-Synthetic oil the SKU number on it is #293600121." I hope this helps. Thanks SimiEd -- I find the search function on this board difficult. Sorry for the double-post above, too.

For me the SeaDoo dealer is pretty far away so I was looking for a non-OEM alternative I could get closer to home. During that research I found some material from Amsoil aimed directly at BRP's comments about the supercharger that seemed helpful. Attached is Amsoil's bulletin on the point, indicating that its own synthetic marine grade 10W-40 WCF was actually better than BRP's at walking the line between minimizing SC slip while still lubricating the engine. Might just be fluff but I figure they wouldn't put their necks on the line without some confidence that the product's OK.

Then again the bulletin specifically references the ceramic washers so I'm not completely sure it applies to the newer steel ones recently installed in my boat.

Thanks for the AMSOIL bulletin on this subject. From what I've been reading on the boards, BRP is backing away from the synthetic oil taboo for their supercharged engines. They themselves now are recommending a semi-synthetic oil for the SC engines. I'm not a chemist and am wondering what the difference between synthetic and semi-synthetic oil is. Nevertheless, BRP seems to be doing away with strictly mineral based lubricates.

BTW...how do you like your '05 Sportster? Did you have the washers in your SC unit changed from ceramic to metal? If so, what was the $$$ ?

Hi Ed -- I just bought the boat this spring so I haven't had a ton of experience with it yet. I bought it from a dealer with 168 hours on it, so as part of the deal they rebuilt the supercharger before I took delivery. They told me they replaced the stock washers with steel (which I think is BRP's current directive). We never discussed the cost.

Short-story-long, I only had the boat for two weeks when I took it on a lake I thought I was familiar with. If I didn't know the lake I would have been more careful, but I thought I did know it. Probably way more dangerous. Anyway I inadvertently went through about 2" of water at 20mph, tearing off the intake grate, cracking the ride plate, pump and pump shoe, gouging the gelcoat and running a pile of rocks through my impeller and wear ring. Despite all that the boat got me back to the dock. Parts were on back order so I only got the boat back a week ago. Total repair cost: $3,500. Thank god it was on my house insurance.

So I think I like the boat, a lot. We'll see...
