Rebuilt Engine Options?

For my 2006 Sportster 215 hp, I think my engine broke a valve and seized.

Where are most people buying rebuilt engines from? I'll need the longblock and head.

I plan on replacing close to the beginning of the season for next year (April 2021) so I have some time to research.

Please check my math, a rebuilt SBT engine is around $2.5k, plus around 400 for the supercharger rebuild.

I asked around and people are charging ~1,250 to rebuild the engine for labor only. My engine is about 15 years old. I assume the machining and parts will be about $1,500-$2k?

I am confident in my ability to transfer the necessary parts to the remanufactured long block and remove and install the engine.

What am I missing?

Do you have all of the tools needed for the swap? An engine alignment tool is most definitely needed for an engine swap.

I went through an engine rebuild this summer and it sucked, I have all the tools and the know how but waiting for the parts like a complete gasket set as well as forged pistons Etc. was no less money than buying an SBT engine which is what I wish I would have done but I didn't know about them until it was too late. You have to consider there could be oil pump damage and clearance issues as well as crank bearings are probably going to be out of spec, my engine had 71 hrs when it cracked a piston and it needed exhaust valves , seats , I replaced the timing chain , guides , it needed crank bearings Etc. Etc. Etc. as well as forged pistons which by the way SBT engines come with(Premium engines). I could have ordered new plug tubes but I siliconed mine, they come with a new engine. I also lost 5 weeks of good summer weather waiting and rebuilding. If you do order one get it with the full installation gasket set. I can't see how the parts and labour could less than 3,000$ for a proper rebuild, once you tear it down and use the manual to check clearances you are bound to find more issues and the cost will rise. You also have to buy a few OEM tools to put the engine back together like a crank and cam locking tool, you should also have or rent a engine alignment tool.

To be perfectly clear (English is not my first language, sorry), you do recommend going the SBT route?

I do recommend going the SBT route because your engine is already 14 years old , headaches are way less and probably cost the same in the end. Get the premium engine with the full installation gasket set.

Some people like SBT engines and some don't. I prefer to build my own and I do quite a few every year but I also buy SBT engines as well. I have had a few SBT 4tecs fail that had to be sent back but the last 5 or 6 I have gotten have been good. I'm an SBT dealer but I let people form their own opinions based on their experience. There is no difference between the premium and standard engines other than the extra 1 year warranty. I haven't had one fail in the 1-2 year period yet. They either seem to fail in the first few hours or they last for several years has been my experience.
