So I've got a Rotax 657 (that's apparently already been rebuilt, pistons say 050) with a bent con rod. I've got the engine out and torn down, I'm just waiting on the PTO spline tool to get the rear flywheel off, then I can totally open her up and have my way.
I'm weighing my options on what to do now as the boat ain't worth much, but I hate to just scrap it out. So I see my options like this:
1. Get a rebuilt crank. Crank for $225 from SBT, get a bunch of misc gaskets and seals, need to replace rings as I bent one removing it. The way I see it, this will cost me about $350-$375 plus s/h. Obviously there's a lot of time involved as well, but this would be my first engine rebuild and the cool factor of doing it myself would have value as well.
2. Get a rebuilt "standard" engine from SBT. $595 + s/h, maybe I could sell the core to get some $ back. Also need an installation seal kit, break in oil, oil block off plate, and some other odds and ends. I see this as being $675 or so + s/h. Honestly, I wouldn't really be looking forward to the reinstallation of the oil injection pump while in the hull.
What other factors am I not thinking of? I have a decent level of confidence that I could install the crank and reassemble, at least with this forum and the shop manual to hold my hand anyway. I'm an engineer by day and I work at a machine shop, so I've got access to fine measuring equipment and I've seem to have all the tools needed except for a couple specialized ones. Are there difficulties that I'm not thinking of that I should factor in? Other advice?
Also, I'm concerned about moving forward without knowing the true root cause of the problem, but I'll be posting a separate thread about that. What do you guys think?
