Rebuilding a 951/947

I've got a 951 that I'll likely be rebuilding. I've heard both sides of replacing the crankshaft and balance. One saying they've had the bottom end last over 300 hours and others saying they need to be replaced at 200 hours. What do you guys think? I'm not 100% sure, but I believe I have a crankshaft and balance that are at 225 hours and another set at 130 hours. Again, I'm not sure if the hours on those parts is accurate as its just the seadoos hours. I'll be getting both out to examine them tomorrow.

I do not want to buy a new crankshaft or balance, having them rebuilt could be an option if you guys think that's the best option. Does anyone know how much a rebuild would cost?

LOL, whoever is telling you 300 hours is full of crap. Yes it can happen but isn't the norm. The rule of thumb is any 951 getting rebuilt should have the crank and balance shaft done, they don't survive a new top end.
200 hours is the normal life expectancy of a 951 crank.

You can still get a rebuilt 951 crank direct from seadoo for $500 and is what I would do. SBT is $375 but not the same as OEM quality, WSM makes cranks.

What about having an old crank rebuilt? Any idea how much that would cost?

Rebuilt caranks is your only option... Even the $500 seadoo one is a rebuilt and you have to send your core back.

You can have your actual crank rebuilt by Competitive Crankshafts that will be the bust there is but it will be $600+

What if I just go with my current crankshaft? $500 is a lot and that doesn't even include a new top end. I could buy a whole rebuilt engine for cheaper.

No way you can buy a complete rebuilt engine for $500.
You can run your old crank but you stand a really good chance of it failing and blowing a hole in your engine. You have been officially warned.

There is absolutely no shortcuts with a 951 that do not result in short term failure. Even perfect cranks by every way you can inspect them can't be trusted.
I've been using wsm cranks. So far good results. And always replace the counterbalance bearings!
Cases are not cheap. The cost for you to rebuild it properly at markup prices is likely similar to getting a reman engine.

Crankshaft/Crankcase had water in it so its likely toast. However the top end was in awesome shape, sadly lost a gasket on the way out so I'll probably just replace the gaskets and rings on the piston and consider my options for a crankshaft.

Crank is shot especially with water in it. It’s not salvageable.
That's what I figured, I have one that's got about 130 hours so I'll look at it and determine if it's worth using. Otherwise I'll end up buying a crank, how do you feel about using a 130 hour balance? If I swap in new sae 30 oil would it be fine?

As said above, do not reuse a 951 balancer or crank. Seriously, we aren’t telling you this to spend your money. We are telling you this because everyone that does it ends up blowing a hole in their cases and misses out on summer. Do it once and do it correctly, doing it twice will cost you even more money in the long run.

You will do it twice and next time replace the cases too and possibly the cylinder block and head

That ballance shafts bearings will fail and knock a hole in the case or that crank will seize a big end bearing and do the same. There's no question of IF what so ever, just a matter of is it going to be10 minutes or 1 hour.

I mean it by saying you cannot trust a 951 unless you do everything right and I've made the same mistakes.

Crank is completely pulled, it's ruined for sure as it was covered in a chocolate milk like residue. I assume its a water and oil mixture. It's also got a ring that came out of place. Where would you guys suggest I buy a new one?

Any Seadoo dealer either brick and mortar or online.

REBUILD-CRANKSHAFT 947 99 | Includes 1 - 5.
This part replaces 290887762.
MSRP: $509.99
Dealer Price: $509.99

Some of the seadoo places show it in stock and some show it as not available. This typically indicates that Seadoo has discontinued the part but not everyone has updated their database so good luck.

2 stroke crankshafts are no longer available from BRP. They have been discontinued for a while and stock seems to have dried up. I've called multiple dealers across the country and all said the same thing on both 951 and 787 cranks. WSM is sold out of 951 cranks for another couple months as well

Order will be canceled and refunded. I've tried more than once this year from various places

FWIW, I also believe and 951 over 200hrs is on borrowed time. I know it's more $ but have you considered a shop to just rebuild the whole engine and get a 1-2 year no fault on the whole thing?

As backed up as all the shops say they are you might get the motor back in a year or 2
