A buddy and I worked on our rave valves - we did two bonehead things
Mine - the gasket now leaks out the back? a fine mist of oil is spraying out the back of the valve covers where they meet the port onto the exhuast. I ordered new gaskets. I am pretty sure that is what did it ('97 XP, rave valves only cleaned twice...probably got some grit in the way). Runs too fast after cleaning at idle in the garage. Ticking a bit too. Sucking air in the bad gaskets would make it lean, run fast,...? Redid and recleaned the gaskets, no change.
His - 2004 GTI RFI. His has that hose in the way on the valve covers. We took his apart becuase his was rough idling and not running very hard this season. Really clean compared to mine but I think we put them in backwards (guilliotine edge towards the plugs were as mine were towards the exhaust with "top" towards the plugs). They should all go bevel towards exhaust port right? Hopefully we did not damage his pistons or something when he ran it for a little while. There is no damage on the valves when removed.
Got another question - one of the two always appears to not move up and down (diaphram that is). Is that becuase of the position of the piston or something? One diaphram will move up and down after tightened onto valve stem. One will not.
