RAVE Melt Down

Took a look at my RAVE valves today (troubleshooting a low power condition).

My PTO valve mechanism was very difficult to remove and I soon found out why. The internals had melted.

Anyone run across this before? I assume the only to make the happen would be due to an exhaust leak (such as a bad bellows or crack in the main plastic (which has now melted away). My bellows looks fine.

Any thoughts here? I also measured my valve stem diameter and compared it to the housing. I have about 0.010" clearance. Seems like a lot, is this normal?

yes, I had one melted but not as severe as yours on the original motor. When the clearances become to much for the O ring to seal and it starts leaking oil and or hot exhaust gases creates this condition. I believe SBT might make an oversize rave valve, or you just might need to purchase the kits and repair it... wouldn`t hurt to call them and ask.
for what it cost IMHO I would replace the bellows as well. it could be weakened enough to fail after you install the tighter parts...
I don`t see any spec in the service manual for wear max limits, maybe someone here with experience in this would know for sure...

Thanks for the reply. Thats kinda what I was expecting. Frustrating that there doesnt seem to be a wear limit listed anywhere.

The valves I have here are stamped M1 and 353 on the "TOP" side. Is this the correct valve for the '97 787?

I was also curious bc I had read where seadoo had updated the valve.
here is a post from here dated back in 2008 that I found searching the net...

In 1997 seadoo came out with a upgraded rave valve it has the # 353 cast into it. These new rave valves have 2 slots in the bottom face of each valve. These valves are stronger and should be installed in every 787 that has the old style # 352 cast valve in them. Hope this helps

Currently I have all new rave`s/bellows/bases etc with these new reman SBT 787`s, and after 7 hours or so I just saw a small trickle of carbon/oil running down the side of the cylinder appox. 3" in length...
I already brought this to their attention and will be monitoring it and report it`s progress, bc this should not be leaking anything. I had thought it was a product of premixing, but we`ll soon see...

I orderd the oversize valves today along with bodies and bellows.

What seemd odd though is that the valves I just pulled out has slots in the down face. If clearance is an issue for bypass of gasses, why not bypass through the slots? Maybe I am missing something.
