Hello all! I am new to this forum and have a couple questions. I have purchased a rebuilt engine (1996 Gsx 787) which has .020 over pistions in it. I was told I would need to adjust the raves to the new pistons but have no Idea how to do this correctly. Also how should I break in the new engine once I have it running. Thanks

Check out your shop manual under tech data. I didnt see a GSX for a 96, but for the 787 engine, .010 over is your first bore over, 2nd oversize = N/A. Which means you must rework the raves with .020 over.

It's not that hard, I had to do mine on a 951.

You have .020 over, which means you must take .010 off of each rave valve. I made a line across the bottom of the rave with a sharpie. I then measured .010 with a dial caliper and scribing a line all the way across the guillotine part of the rave valve. (The sharpie line makes it easier to scribe into with the calipers.)

Took the valve over to the grinder wheel and very carefully took the amount off while keeping the same curve on it.

Cleaned it up with a soft attachment for a dremel tool.

Put the rave in and check your clearance with the cylinder. Look at your tech data in ur manual.
Hope that helps. Gimme a shout if ya get stuck.:cheers:

BTW you posted in the manuals section. I'm sure someone will move it though.

Break in?

If you have premix, no oil injection, then you should mix 32:1 for the first tank, 40: or 50:1 there after.

After you run the first tank, I'd mix a 40:1. Then, after it's half gone, take out and read your plugs. If they are dark, go to a 50:1 mix.

If you still have your oil pump connected, run at least a premix of 40:1 with your oil injection system.
