Question on Poppy Cover

Question for Poppy cover users. I have a 2007 Utopia. I will be keeping it on a lift at a dock, and the dock is on the port side of the boat. I would like to get a Poppy cover, but I'm wondering if it will be difficult to put on and take off, given that I won't have access around the entire perimeter, and also that the ratchet tightener is on the starboard side. I won't be able to tighten the cover while standing on the dock. Any Poppy users who keep their boat at a dock have any experience doing this?

Email Poppy and ask about options. Maybe you can get a cover with the tightener on the port side.

I should have noted this in the first post...but I did ask, and they can't put the tightener on the port side. Not sure why...but they can't.

I would say that since you're not trailering it, adjusting the strap tight enough to stay put, but loose enough that you can pull the port side rear corner down over the rub rail would be workable.

Heck, my cover is plenty tight with only a short piece of the strap engaged.

I have a poppy cover for my sportster and am very happy with it. Because of the design of my boat I am able to install the cover and tighten the ratchet while sitting on top of the cover and the back sun pad. Your boat is obviously bigger and something like that may not be possible.

The design of the drawstring pull is very similar to the drawstring pull on a pair of sweatpants for instance. The strings come out of holes placed in the sewed casing of the waistband. If you want the strings to come out elsewhere you could just make a hole somewhere else.

This principle should work with the poppy cover. The straps come out holes placed on the port side, but if you want them to come out somewhere else simply cut new holes where you want the straps to exit to the ratchet mechanism. The strap on my boat is floating (I believe) and is not anchored or sewed to the cover so it would just be a simple task of reorienting the strap to a new position in the cover. Since your cover is bigger there may be different issues, but I imagine it could be modified without much trouble even if there is a little sewing involved.

I have a poppy cover for my 2010 wake. The solution to your problem is an extra 8 foot section of dock at the back of the boat hooked to the main dock. I did this with mine and love it. Makes getting in and out of the boat easy well worth it.

The heavy duty ratchet strap is built into a pocket sewn onto the cover on the rear starboard side. Newer models may have a more rigid cover. My replacement cover came as a Commercial Sewing brand "Outer Armor" and had the hard shell.

Due to the swimdeck/rear platform on the utopia, it is not possible to work the strap or reach over from the boat.

I see....the ratchet assembly for my sportster cover is completely separate and not sewn like yours. The only attachment is a loop of velcro to hold everything tight to the cover, it works surprisingly well.

Thanks for all the replies. Based on Brutal's reply (many thanks)...it appears that this cover won't work very well for my application. That's too bad-I was hoping to use something simpler than the two piece factory snap in cover.

I went a season using my cover on my challenger with it in the water. I could not access the ratchet. However I just flipped over and pull everything down dockside (port side) as the ratchet is on the starboard side. The only issue was bad rain/wind combo that over loaded the cover with water.

So I say get it. If you have bad storm come up, you can always swim over and tighten it.

Updating this thread with some longer term user comments on the Poppy cover.

I love the cover. HOWEVER, it rashes the hell out of the gelcoat under the strap and the rear deck upholstery when towing. It also wasn't able to withstand the rubber bumper on the windshield - wore right through the cover. The edge of the windscreen is also wearing on the cover.

I will be getting new factory style snap on canvas covers made for my boat and will no longer tow with the poppy cover.

I live in a dry and dusty clime, and also tow behind my 5th wheel. Those of you that use gills may not have the issue.

I spent a year with my boat docked port side with the strap on the starboard side. Honestly it's not an issue. I keep just tight enough to pop it on/off. I could get on the rear deck push down on the cover on the right side and then get on the dock and finish it by hitting the left side of the boat.

The only issue I had was a hell storm that rain buckets and collapsed the cover.
