Question about capsizing a 4 stroke

Some young folks capsized their Sea-Doo Spark near me tonight and they waved at me because they didn't know how to turn it back up. I told them how to position themselves and the ski was back upright. All in all, it was capsized for about 60 to 90 seconds. I don't think it matters anymore which you turn it but I told them which way to turn the ski back like on my old 2 stroke as per sticker. BTW my 2018 GTI same engine as Spark doesn't require to turn it back one way or another anymore but I didn't take any chance. They were very worried about the ski that was brand new. I told them to start the engine and it fired right up but I saw some oil burning for about 30 seconds then it was fine. I told them to give it a little ride and everything was fine (no more smoke).

Is it normal that it smokes a bit after capsizing? I know this happens on my 4 stroke lawnmowers when I clean the blades but on a Sea-Doo?

Sure it's normal. All the oil in the lower end, is going to flow into the cylinders, and the pistons are now acting line the oil pan. Some oil (not a lot) will leak down past the rings into the upper end, and it will be burnt when you fire it back up.

On 4-Tec engines, the TOPS valve will close when the ski is capsized, preventing oil from flowing back into the intake.

My manual only says to "... return the watercraft upright," no mention any particular CW or CCW rotation.

Per service manual Sea-Doo allows a 5 minute capsized time limit before they consider the ski water flooded. All my operators are required to capsize and then right the ski near the dock as part of a checkout procedure. Granddaughters. I feel much better that they will return safely to the dock if they ever capsize in open water.

Yes, I was monitoring them closely when I saw they capsized. I gave them about a minute to get it done by themselves and after that time I decided to go and help them at the same moment they start raising their arms in the air. The ski was capsized for a bout 90 seconds, total. They had no clue on how to flip it back.

My GTI 2018 manual says the same as well as on the sticker: doesn't say which way. I was pretty sure they could do it both ways but I told them the "classic" way of our old 2 strokes (wonder if ALL 2 strokes were the same).

Kawasaki SXR-1500 (4-strokes) still have a preferred rotation (clockwise) to right them. So it’s not just the old 2-smokes...
