We all know that life jackets are compulsory in most places. But I'm interested in knowing what safety equipment others carry with them while out on the water and their jet ski. I personally always have the following: drinking water, energy bars, PFD2 life jacket, gloves, special purpose sun glasses with strap. A whistle, red and orange flares, V-sheet, torch, fire extinguisher, diving shoes, sunblock, UHF radio, and a mobile phone. I bet your thinking what about he e-perb? Well I don't have one yet as I haven't been more than 1 km from the coast.

Check with your local Boating authority for required equip needed. It looks like you got it covered ok.

Hi there Kustomkarl. Thanks for reply. Yes I'm sure I'm covered for Australian waters, but I was asking what other riders take with them. I personally always plan for the worst.

Hey Scottozy
Mate.Always take some zipties.A mates xp dropped the steering cable from the h/bars the other day.Zipped up and he got home.Ziplock plastic bags, phillips head and flat head screwdriver.A couple of spanners,10 12 13 mm.Always carry a mirror, for signalling. Some Glowsticks.Put them all in a tupperware container. They seal up and you put those little silicon bags in there.(moisture).A length of round braided ski rope is good, because you squeeze it up to braid any length you want.I am familiar with the area you ride and help may be a long time coming.Always take water. And a stainless steel knife.Hope this helps you.
Just don't go to wide(from the coast)

Hi there. Yep thought if the mirror, being ex army, got spanners and tool kit. Good idea zip ties. Not sure in size needed. Got tool kit with screw drivers etc. If I was going off shore I guess spare spark plugs might be worth taking.
Also in my rxp manual says I should carry a hose clamp. Its used to clamp off a water pipe before ski is every being towed along.

Hey Scottozy
Get some very small zipties 100mm long and some mid 150mm and some 300mm long. These can be used to fix a hose clamp if needed. They will hold a cat and a dog together. When it comes to the clamping of the pipe to tow the ski,I put in an inline tap.Cut pipe.Put tap in. clamp up and it's done.I don't know why it is not standard. If you want .I'll send you a pic..It is so easy 5 mins.Spark plugs. If you are out wide(never ever turn the engine off)in the ocean is what I mean.Mate and his missus in a boat thought it might be "romantic".Boat would not start afterwards. It killed the moment.Think about trying to change the plugs if you are out wide.Spanners,Seats off etc.
Make sure the stuff you do have, is not able to bounce around.Use bits of sponge, towels to stop gear moving.
Hope this helps you mate

Some very good advise for safety

Now that's great advise. Why hadn't I thought of that. Better still why isn't a tap standard. It would be an easy fix. I understand what your saying about plugs to. Would be tricky on the water.
Is your ski a supercharged model Crisso?
Hey I might be down the gold coast this Sunday afternoon with ski. Plans unsure at this time but we coming down for baseball. My email is smagee1962@gmail.com of you want to send pics. Thanks heaps

Hey Scottozy
Here is a photo of the inline tap so I don't have to fiddlefart around with a clamp.

Because, many people would be blowing engines because the valve was run while in the closed position whether it was by accident, forgotten about, etc.

I suppose people would forget about the tap sometimes.I have a laminated card attached to the dess cap lanyard. It reads, Bungs,fuel,W/tap..
Just in case....

I suppose some people would need another laminated card attached to car keys saying "jetski, trailer, lanyard" lol. But yes I see what you mean about possibly forgetting the tap.

Seems obvious, but not mentioned yet: First Aid Kit with bandages, tape, wraps etc. 2 summers ago I got a 5 inch laceration to the bone while walking my ski out from beaching it and my ankle scraped something on the bottom. Without a good wrap and bandages immediately avail. i could have been in trouble since I was a couple miles from anyone. Luckily my 10 year old daughter already knew how to drive.
best wishes

Freakin' OUCH!!!!!
I bet that lifted you.My kids could drive at a young age also.(we lived on a property, farm, ranch) it sure helps

Hi thanks for your reply. Did you ever find out what is was that cut you? Yes a first aide kit is a good idea. I'm actually a nurse. I think a good first aide kit should always be kept in the towing vehicle. A more basic one for the ski. let's hope we never need them.

Went back and probed around with an oar but couldnt find anything obvious, and wasnt going to reach in with hand. River gets flooded each spring melt and all kinds of stuff comes through so we are constantly on guard and finding new obstructions that we buoy ourselves since no water patrols at all. see ya

Grayrider - glad it wasn't more serious than what it was. I always wear water shoes, don't know if that would help protect your ankle tho.

Where can I buy the taps....home depot, Lowes, auto parts???? what size?

I always wear protection... just in case! ;-)

It was said but it wasn't. How about spark plugs? I was told to always have an extra set of plugs so in my case, it's 4. No oceans in Nebraska USA so I don't need to carry all that stuff. Almost always someone at the lake to help if I need. The lakes aren't that big around here either. Also a bailing bucket is manditory here. Well, in a boat anyway. Not sure about PWC

A vee sheet is an international distress signal. Its a plastic sheet in flouro orange with a big black V on it.It folds up to next to nothing. If you go offshore in any boat in any country,it is the 1st signal you give.It means that there are no life threathening situations at hand. It's about 6"x4" foot. It's first meaning is ,I am in need of help,.It is mainly used in ocean situations.Hope this helps
