New to the forums, but not new to boating.

I have a chance to buy a 1997 SeaDoo 15' Twin engine Speedster. The owner says it has been sitting a lot “because he has too many other boats to play with” and wants to sell it. Claims it has ~50 hours on it. Is there an engine clock on the unit I could check?

I would use the unit on inland lakes for taking short rides with my wife and 4 year old twin boys. Also will using it, occasionally, for a tow vehicle for tubing and skiing.

The boat looks in generally good shape for a 12 year old boat. It has some abrasions in the gel coat from banging into a dock and a few minor scratches in a few decals. Nothing major. No rips in the seats. Bottom of the hull looks good. Nothing here that cannot be fixed or ignored.

The engine compartment has a light oil film and a little dirt, but otherwise looks like a used boat. The out drive units have a very light coating of mud or sediment on them; they are not black. The reverse gates are there and the “finger or grates” are attached on bottom, in front of the water pickups for the jet units

I know nothing about the Rotax engines and could use some advice on them.
What is the hp rating? Is this an oil injection with carburetors engine? Does this boat have electronic ignition? Does it have the DESS security system? What are the top few maintenance items I should be thinking about?

Big thing I do not want to do is buy “someone else’s problem” and sink big buck into it.
Besides the obvious "take it for a ride to see if it works", what should I be looking for / what should I be checking and what questions should I ask in terms of mechanics??

Thanks in advance for the help. I have another boat and that website & forum is vary active and a huge help. Looking forward for your input.

50 hours on a 13 year old rig sounds fishy, unless both motors were rebuilt. So who rebuilt it would be my first question and if oem parts were used. Then a compression test and water trial and the final test is your gut feeling. Unless your buying new with a warranty it will always be a crap shoot.

Thanks for the info.

I have read thru a number of articles & posts on this site. But I thought I might get some more input beyond what already was posted.
Are there FAQs for buying or maintaining a Seadoo jet boat on this site?
