Disappointment

I recently replaced my wear-rings myself. I had studied up on it and I took the time to go through the microfiche and apparently failed to notice the part about replacing the neoprene seal until after getting everything back together and taking it for a test-ride.

Of course, with no neoprene seal the cavitation was pretty bad - almost to not getting on plane with me and two friends. I bought a pair of the SBT-brand seals and began to take them off again.

I was able to remove the port pump easily, checked the pump oil for any signs of water contamination and I noticed a slight amount of milkiness to it - at which point I noticed that the rubber boot that covers the driveshaft is still attached to the plastic cowling that covers the driveshaft! It seems to have generated a fair amount of heat because it almost seems melted on :-( - I fully expect to have to cut this rubber boot away and replace that before use.

With that said, I decided to pull the starboard pump off. Three of the nuts came off nicely. The fourth took a bit of turning to make some movement and now it's stuck on the end of the bolt, causing both the stud and nut to move when turning either direction. Being that this is the top-left nut, it's going to be tricky to try to get some vice grips onto the threads to get the nut off. I guess my question is - from looking at the microfiche and the other pump it appears that these are less of bolts and more like studs with a square fitting about halfway in - is there any other way besides brute force to try and pull this nut (and pump) off?

I will add photos when I get back to the boat later tonight.

I wonder whether the reason for the rubber boot getting warm and attaching to the outer plastic is because the impeller was not tight enough. Does that sound reasonable or perhaps there was something else at play?

I'm not sure why the rubber impeller boot would heat up, maybe the drive shaft wasn't seated all the way in the impeller, also be sure to use waterproof of marine grease inside the impeller.

I wouldn't worry too much about the stuck bolt just thread the shaft back in and torque it down, I've got a bolt on my 96GTI that's been like that for years.

Water in the pump is troublesome, use a new "O" ring on the pump cone, and smear a dab of RTV sealant before installing the cone. The other place it could be leaking is the double lip seal at the other end of the pump at the impeller shaft. You can check the oil in the pump by using a Q-Tip, so you won't have to remove the cone every time you check the oil.
