PTO Maintenance

Nope. Unless the boot rips, and the grease goes flying... I only give it a couple pumps a year.

hey doc, do you have oiteker clamps on all our pto's yet ? i do remember you posting that good quality zip ties will work on the pto boot. i have been trying to get my pto to hold enough grease to get that little extra pressure on the carbon seal, but no matter how hard i tighten the zip ties with pliers i still lose a little grease w/ every ride. so for now i do have to pump 1 or 2 pumps after every ride.(and wipe the grease up) would you happen to know what brand of zip you use or where you bought them from??? thanks Tim

does anyone know what size the oiteker clamps are for the pto boot?? (i wrecked the originals on removal) do i have to order them? i can't seem to find them locally. thanks, tim

Nope. I use GOOD zip ties, and never had a failure. I just serviced a boat, that I worked on 5 years ago... and the ties are still on.

On my personal stuff... My XP has 3 year old tie's on it.

That's the thing.... the boot isn't supposed to hold any pressure. I know guys say to pump it until the shaft moves. While that's true... it wont hold it forward for long. Eventually the grease will come past the splines, and wind up in the boot. (and isn't doing anything to lube the splines) AND... the pressure of the carbon seal will push the shaft back into the PTO.

There isn't a seal on the shaft to hold the grease behind the shaft. SO... you are causing your own problem, with trying to do something, that it isnt' designed to do.

If you need more pressure on the carbon seal... replace the seal boot.

Like I said above... 1~2 pumps a year is plenty. the PTO boot is just to contain the mess.

Try Panduit brand cable ties, I get mine at Graybar, but I would imagine most electrical supply houses have them

sooooo....... i guess i will stop pumping the extra grease into the boot (thinking i needed the extra pressure). less grease flinging in the hull and a better understanding of the driveline, THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS FORUM, learn a new trick every day!!!!!
the ties i have on seem to be of good quality but just wouldn't quite hold in all the grease when i was pumping a little before every ride. i am certain now that i didn't need that little boost in pressure i thought i was getting. the boots on my carbon seals seem to be good and pliable. i do think that they are factory 99' boots though, so i loosened the rear clamps holding them to the thru hull fitting and pulled the boots torward the pto a little and placed a medium sized zip tie around the thru hull to keep the boots a little snugger. THANKS AGAIN, TIM
