As shown in the attached pics, I have been using worm screw clamps on the pto boot on one of my engines. Can this be a problem? Should I use the OEM clamps? If I need to use the OEM clamps, is there a less expensive set of pliers I can purchase instead of the Seadoo pliers?
Thanks

Can using these clamps cause any damage? Can they contribute to more than normal water leaking in?
Thanks

as the Doc says, out of balance, and unnecessary vibration.
I`ve used small locking vice grip type needle nose pliers to squeeze/lock the oem clamps in place...

The Oetiker pliers are made by several comapnies, Lisle and OTC to name a few. Here's a google link to the Lisle one can be had for under $20 and worth every penny. You can probably buy them at your local auto parts stores if the sell the Lisle brand

Thanks racerxxx!
I didn`t care for the ones at MCmastercarr... I completely forgot about Lisle and OTC as I have many of their specialty tools... thanks...

Thanks for the responses guys. I had one more question that I forgot to ask, can I use marine grease in the pto grease fitting? I know that the manual says synthetic grease, but can I hurt anything by using the same grease I would use in the trailer wheel bearings?

OK.... we can try again. (it was a pic from the net, and they probably killed the link)

real Okeeter pliers are normally only good for setting new clamps. And... there are a few styles of Okeeter clamps. Okeeter clamps are great in production. The tools can be set, and the people on the line don't have to worry about torque. Personally... I just pitch them in the trash, and replace them with either screw clamps, or zip-ties. (depending on the application)

How critical are those PTO boots? My boat does not have them and my mechanic who rebuilt the engines said no big deal just grease it lightly and more frequently. I have my doubts and think he was just too lazy to replace them:rolleyes:. I assume removal of pump and driveshaft is required to replace the boots?

I think they are very important and he was lazy for sure. The RETAIN the grease when you pump the PTO. The boot will hold the grease in so the drive shaft is pushed back, especially important if your boat has the carbon ring set up. I'm sure your hull is lathered with grease as well as the under side of the PTO covers. I'd suggest picking up the boots, clamps, and pliers and installing them.
