Proper RPM range?

2003 Sportster 4tec seems to be running high RPM's on tach, but need reference.

Here's the background: 3 years ago we ran the boat out of fuel and fried the fuel pump (i'll get to that). Left us floating out across the bay with no anchor or paddle. Since my wife was 8 months pregnant at the time, we parked the boat back in the garage where it sat until this month. Always had other places for that $$$ to go with a baby/toddler running around the house. My daughter is finally old enough to want to ride, so we pulled to boat out and started re-working it. We pulled the fuel pump out and found the float broken and laying on the bottom of the tank. No wonder fuel gauge showed 2/3 full when it really only had 1 gallon or so. My cousin and I replaced the fuel pump assembly, battery, most of the fuses, and the sparkplugs yesterday. Took about 6 tries, but finally got it fire and run on the hose at the end of the day. Sounded like it was running rough. I hauled the boat down to the bay today and crossed my fingers. Took another 4 times to get it started, but I was finally able to get it running. The more i ran it, the better/smoother it got. Only issue was the RPM's seemed to be real high.

Boat is idling at 2500 just in forward with no throttle. Take it out into the bay and hit the throttle and it jumps to 7-7500 and stays there until i back off the throttle at 30-35 on the speedometer. Once i back off the throttle and even out at 35, RPM's drop to 6-6500. What is the proper RPM range for these motors? I have the single 155 rotax.

I have the same boat as you & I avg 32 - 35 mph (gps speed - my speedo is broken) between 6000 - 6500 rpms as well depending on load in the boat. So I would say your rpms while cruising are fine.

My cold idle in forward is around 2200rpms & once it's at normal operating temps it bounces from 18 - 1900 rpms. Hope this helps.

Thanks camelpak. I noticed the same thing at idle with my RPM's backing off below 2000 after the first couple of runs. I just havent run this boat in so long I dont have a frame of reference for whats high as what is to be expected. The tach seems super easy to peg when i get into the throttle.
