I recently purchased a project 1997 Sea Doo Challenger. On the prop shaft it doesn't have a carbon ring or ring seal carrier. What it has is a type of grease able sleeve containing a needle bearing with seals on each end. Has anyone seen this set up before? I'm seriously thinking of changing it back to stock.

That is stock for early machines and many say better than the carbon seals.

Carbon rings came later. Keep that set up, it is better. Just keep it greased. OSD to a seal kit for them that improves the sealing.

Its a simple setup,,,unfortunately sometimes,,the seals go,,,water gets trapped,,,the bearings seize to the shaft,,,and then tear out the carrier fitting coming out of the hull,,keep it greased with marine grade grease.

A nice advantage is that if you want to pull the pump,,,you do not have to wrestle removng the damn circlip!
