Hey guys, I am interested in picking up a jet boat and have one in mind, but it has a caveat to it. Overall the boat is in good shape, all the gauges and so forth work like they should, seats are in pretty decent shape, no tears but some fading and such. The issue is that one motor has a bad crank seal. Knowing that a motor rebuild is in the very near future, what would you guys pay?

Thanks in advanced!

In good shape those boats can go for 3500-5500. With a bad motor, id really only pay 2000-2500 personally.

Prices are regional. I agree with RF that it's worth about $5k with both engines solid. I'd think you'd want to pay about $3k for this one assuming you want this boat. If you're looking to buy it, fix it and flip it to make money definitely less than that. Twin engine 4 carb jet boats can be money pits.

You say it needs an engine in the near future, so it runs and drives now? How do you know the crank seal is bad? Most boats are sold as running or not, kind of odd to find one that runs now but won't soon.

Thanks for the responses guys!

The seller of the 1999 Speedster pulled a d$#k move on me though and sold it a couple hours before him and I scheduled to lake test the boat. I was actually getting the Jeep ready to go look at the boat and figured I would call to double-check that we were good to go (Glad I did!). That's the normal Craigslist crowd I suppose. The reason I know it had bad crank seals is I was able to talk with the mechanic that serviced it since new. They described the normal issues with bad crank seals, the boat sits for a couple weeks it pukes oil.

I am looking for a boat to keep, specifically looking for a 1998-1999 Speedster (not an SK), or a Challenger 1800. My wife doesn't love jetski's and much as I do, so we are going to get a boat so she can enjoy the lake as well. It'll also be used for tubing, wake boarding, etc with friends and the rest of the extended family. I was going to look at a '99 Challenger today, but the guy canceled on me, so I'm still searching.

Thanks again!

Check the Grand Rapids craigslist. There have been a few Speedsters there recently.

Thanks, I check them all a couple times a day (~200 miles radius from Toledo is my main search area). I think the Speedster that I tried to buy is on the GR one, but it's sold. A couple of them are really dreaming on their asking price, a few 1998's are listed at nearly $9k.

Yeah, I saw them. I paid $6,500 for mine last year, but it was MINT and all the maintenance records. The boat was never stored in the water, always stored inside, always wiped down after every use (top and bottom) always maintained by the marina. Other than a few minor items (bilge tube and a starter), I've had no issues.

Been there. It stings. I had a time set up then got a text message "boat is sold". This was a $20k+ boat I was getting for 16k. Stupid day job getting in the way.
