pressure washer pump questions

Yep, I'm asking about a pressure washer pump on a Seadoo forum cause I know you guys know the answers.

I'm finally getting back to a task I stated last year. I have water leaking into the pump oil on my pressure washer, I bought a water seal kit for the pump, but concerned if the condition of the pistons are going to ruin the new seals and cause it to leak again.

The pistons have a black paint/coating on them presumably to keep them from rusting. As seen in the picture with the GREEN arrow, that coating is mostly chipped off of one of the pistons and what is left has rough edges.

I'm guessing that is where my leak was because in the next pciture the rust stained hole corresponds to the piston with the chipped paint.

The internals of the pump and the bearing look ok , not rusted at all.

I was hoping that I do not have to buy a piston kit for the pump.

Questions:

1)What should I do about the chipped paint on the piston? leave it alone, lightly sand it smooth? take the piston out and buff it? repaint it (with what)? replace it (I think the piston kit from memory was like $129 , it was last year when I looked it up)

2) If I were to remove the pistons, how do I get the retaining clip (RED ARROW) off without ruining the clip?

3) Will I need a special tool to compress the piston to put the retaining clip back on?

4) The YELLOW ARROW points to a brass cap that sits between the piston and the rotating ring that works the pistons. When I reassemble, do I just put a drop of oil on the cap and hope the static friction holds it in place as I reassemble the pump or is there another trick I need to know?

5) What can I spray the parts with to clean before I reassemble?

Thanks Guys!

You still on this one?

OK... here we go...

1) I think you really need to ID what the coating is. But, unless you are replacing it... I would leave it alone. But... I would make sure what's on it, is stuck. Just put your finger nail on it, and make sure it's not lifting.

2) Those are basically "Buddy Nuts", and they weren't meant to be disassembled. If you remove it... it should be replaced.

3) Probably not. Just push.

4) I would probably use a little grease to hold it in place. If it's on the wet side... I would use Silicon grease... if it's on the oil side... use a petroleum grease.

5) If there are plastic parts... Kerosene. If it's all metal... Brake cleaner spray.

yeah never finished it (you know my issues), took it apart, ordered the new seals, then it got cold in the garage and I used that as an excuse to never put it back together. Well, plus I never found a local place that sells pump oil...

Then I wasn't sure what to do about the pistons so I let it sit til now. But...it sounds like I just have to get a bottle of pump oil and put it back together (which will only take a couple minutes).

Worse yet... never got the chainsaw finished either. I couldn't find a place to get case sealer?

How big is this pressure washer that the piston kit is $129?
A new one at HD or Lowes is only about $249-349 depending on HP.& PSI.

Can you send it away and get it rebuild with a 2 yr no-fault warranty? :) :) :)
What was the compression & thanks for the pics. :)

Ahhhh I wish I saw this sooner... I did small engine for years, Briggs master tech, Kohler expert tech, etc etc..

Anyway, Dr Honda answered your questions.

The sad part is I have a very similar pump in the garage- brand new never used. I bet its the same or close enough- you're welcome to it if need be.

Case sealant for the chainsaw? Dirko HT. I may have a new tube somewhere in my gargantuan tool box....

Thanks guys. I'll put the new seals in and see if that fixes the leak.
SMC - thanks for the offer on the pump, I'll get back to you if mine still has problems after the new seals.

Jake,

What is the model number of the pump (located on the part in pic #4, opposite side)? It looks like the same one I have mated to a different engine. The little book I got on it indicated the oil was not anything special, but different for different types of pumps that might have been used on my unit. Of course the book is home in my garage and I am at work so would need to respond a bit later.

My unit seems to have lost some pressure so may need to start another project.

Hi Rod,
I never noticed the tiny writing on the bottom of that label until I was bolting the pump back on yesterday. It says to use 75W90 - same as jetski pump, who woulda thunk it.

See, ya knew you were going to the right place for answers, even if one of them was literally "in your hands".

smc0922, the pump I have is the same mfg as Jake, but model XJW2.4G.24. If jake has no need, I might. Thanks.

Shawn, I just fired up the pressure washer to test it out with the new seals and within seconds watery oil was running out the check valve on the pump oil fill plug so it is still doing exactly what it was doing before. If you want to unburden yourself of the pump in your garage I will gratefully take it off your hands :). I will PM you as well.
