I have removed the oil injection on my spx and need some advice on which seadoo oil to use. I have been using the xps synthetic but others use the regular mineral oil, which is about half the cost of the full synthetic. Can I use the mineral oil safely, the manual recommends the use of the mineral oil but it is also written in 1995. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Synthetic....

Brian, if you've been burning the synthetic oil for a while, it would be advisable to continue to run it. There is an old saying, "you can go from mineral to synthetic, but not from sythetic to mineral".

I can save you a couple bucks though. I've been using the "QuickSilver" brand of Full Synthetic oil that I buy from Wally World (Wal Mart). The manual says to use XP-S Bombardier oil or suitable non NMMA, non TCW-3, low ash oil. The QuickSilver brand fits these requirements. Just make sure when you go to Wally World, go to the oil section and look for the Gallon size. Look on the back. Read it........it will say that it can be used in "Seadoo"......

The QuickSilver oil also comes in a "synthetic blend". It's even a couple more dollars cheaper. But, if your going to change to a blend and your runnign full synthetic, you'll need to clean out your oil system and re-prime.

Louis I was at walmart and I noticed that they have 2 oils from quick silver that I believe will work. I do not believe that eather were full synthetic. The one that has the seadoo registered trade mark has a synthetic additive. The other is only $2.00 cheaper but is the correct type if I am not mistaken but does not have the seadoo regester trade mark. I am almost willing to bet that you have to pay $ 2.00 for that trade mark. I seen that they had three types at the walmart that I was at.

Amsoil?

I would agree with the Amsoil. I have done a lot or research on their oil and even spoke with one of their tech support team members on the phone reguarding their suggestions as to the best oil for the SC and SCIC 4-TECs and the ceramic washer problems but the post here is meant to direct people to an easily accessible oil.

I think everyone has a Walmart near, not so easy to find the Amsoil, unless you want to purchase it online.

Amsoil Interceptor for the two smokes ;) Low smoke, great lubrication
To minimize interruption, you purchase Amsoil a case at a time.

As for the 4-tecs, I would stay with good JASO MA oil like the BRP oil or a Castrol Equivalent. JASO MA has friction modifiers. btw, BRP oil is made by Castrol

As for the ceramic washers, they have history of breaking. the superchargers need to be taken out ASAP and have metal washers installed. This is common practice in the high performance arena..

ASk me how I know..........;0

Ceramic washers....

The issue with ceramic washers has been a topic of hot discussion in the forum several times. I did a lot or research on this and from what I see, there is two issues that caused this.

First, Rotax looking for the best material, capable of not retaining any heat and low friction, couldn't have been a better choice. The only problem was, they never figured that users would use synthetic oil in them. The operators guide specifically states to use a "mineral" oil.

Second, if the users realized that the synthetic oil they were changing over to was going to cause the ceramic washers to dissolve, I bet they would have continued to use the mineral oil.

Looking at the friction and heat properties of these two types of material, I'd have been much more happier with something I knew was going to allow slip, with minimum heat built from friction from a component that turns 45,000 rpm.
Everyone knows that ceramic has been used in high heat applications, even by NASA, since it was found to be a great insulator. To bad it didn't work out for the SC 4-TEC's.

But yes, I do agree. If you got the ceramic slip washers still installed in your Doo, you need to have them changed out to steel ones. If your a premium member, we have a manual that shows this procedure, step by step and it looks like, if anyone who has did an upper end rebuild or split a casing and pulled a crank, should be able to do this procedure.

The new X model 4-tecs have an extra oiling hole for the shaft. and Bombardier upgraded to metal washers for 08' on all the SC 4-tec models

Jerry Gaddis from 4-tec performance does this task very cheap. He checks the slip moment and shims is necessary. He also does the ceramic bearing upgrade if requested.
