Potential Gel Coat Problem

Hey guys,

I am in the market for a used sea doo boat- I would like to join the club! I found a 2002 Utopia in my area that I went to test drive yesterday. The motor and the interior looked to be in pretty darn good shape for a boat of that age. The test drive went great but when the owner pulled the boat out of the water, the hull gave me cause for concern. It was stored in the water for years of its life. The gel coat is discolored- see pictures attached. Is this something to worry about? Does it need to be fixed, or is it just an appearance thing? I have thoughts but I'm not really sure. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like someone painted the hill with anti fouling paint at some point. With a ton of elbow grease you can get that looking nice. I think guys were using CLR to tackle the brunt of the work. I'll take a look later when I'm on my pc for that thread.

Thanks for the feedback Racerxxx. Before you posted that, I was thinking that paint was factory standard. I agree that it is anti-foul coating. I'm a lot less concerned about it knowing that it is an additional feature that is now starting to wear off, as opposed to a necessity that will need to be redone. For my buying decision, I can deal with a cosmetic issue; it may even help me get the price lower :) In the future, I will look through the threads for advice on cleaning.

Hi,
I use oxcalic acid its the best stuff for gel coat cleaning. It may be the active ingredient for Y10 and that seems effective. You might find it locally in a hardware store called Bar keepers Friend I left my Utopia in a tidal river for three months and it came out brown and furry. I bought some 6% solution online and put it in a plant spray bottle and sprayed it over the hull. The brown turns white almost straight away. Leave for 5 minutes and with a soft brushing the rest comes away, rinse off with water. Hull looks like new again.
