piston rings?

I have a 1998 xp limited with the 947 engine, I am replacing piston and rings and I am going back together with it. i need to know how to line up the ring gap. I was told away from the exhaust port and 180` from each other. Is this right? In lline with the wrist pin?

not quite sure if read'n ur thread right, but the piston needs installed w/ the arrow on top point'n to exhaust side, then the rings, you'll see 1(black pin) look'n thing in each groove, thats where rings need to close on/around...hope helps

So that pin thing is what I did not understand from the manual, It must be really small to fit in the ring gap?

Carefully study the groove in the piston. The pin is usually a steel pin, (pretty small) that keeps the ring from rotating. If the gap in the ring ever gets to a port, well, it's over for that motor!

You won't be able to install the Rings with the piston unless you have the free end of the rings on each side of the Pin in the ring groove...
