Hello. Need to know if the coating on the side of the piston is necessary? Removed from my 787 GTX engine. Not too much left. Want to use a wire wheel to clean it up. Also how to remove carbon from the top ?
Thanks.

You should never clean pistons with a wire wheel.

If the coating on the aftermarket pistons is worn through then your pistons and cylinder walls are worn beyond spec and you will need to bore oversize anyways. The first step should be to have your pistons and cylinders measured by a machine shop using the correct gauges to see if it is still within spec.
